India, which recorded the highest number of road deaths since the start of global data collection, registered 174 thousand such fatalities in 2023. This figure accounted for just over 14% of the total number of people who died in traffic accidents worldwide, which reached 1.22 million.
According to the latest WHO Global Health Estimates (GHE), in 2023, road injuries were the eighth leading cause of death among men in India. Falls were the eighth most significant cause of death among women. However, overall, road traffic injuries ranked tenth among the causes of death for both men and women in India, while fatalities caused by falls were the ninth cause.
