Fonopedic lost nearly 60 thousand reais after falling for a scam involving a fake bank manager in Rio Preto

A 50-year-old fonopedic suffered financial damage amounting to 57 thousand reais, becoming a victim of fraud involving a fake bank manager in the city of São José do Rio Preto (São Paulo state). This incident was officially registered with the Civil Police this Thursday (the 1st).

According to the incident report, the victim received a call from a woman who claimed to be her bank account manager. The suspect stated that a registration authorization needed to be completed and warned that account blocks might occur if the procedure was not followed, especially considering the expected arrival of funds under a medical contract.

At that time, the fonopedic explained that she was accompanying her father, who was in the hospital, and could not personally visit the bank branch. The alleged manager advised her to log into internet banking via a computer and follow a step-by-step instruction provided during the call.

After following the instructions, the victim's computer froze, and the messages she exchanged with the scammer disappeared from the screen. When she tried to use the banking application on her mobile phone, she was unable to do so and began receiving system error messages.

Unable to manage the funds in her account for several hours, the victim went to the branch and discovered that numerous transfers via Pix and bill payments had been made without her permission. Part of the money was sent to two women preliminarily identified by the investigation.

This case was registered as theft by fraud using an electronic or information device at Pulantai Delegacia Sectional de São José do Rio Preto. The incident was forwarded to the 3rd police district of the municipality, which is conducting an investigation to identify and locate those involved.

Polish activists launch first dispenser with abortion pills

Activists from Poland have introduced their first dispenser for medical abortions, which they named 'abortomate'. This small pink cabinet contains 22 compartments with packages of medication required for a medical abortion.

Kinga Jelincka, director of the Women Help Women foundation based in Canada and co-founder of Abortion Dream Team, stated that they are constantly looking for ways to make access to abortion simpler, more accessible, welcoming, and person-centered. These statements were made by her in an interview with the French news agency AFP.

The dispenser is located inside an abortion support center that the activists created over a year ago in a symbolic location—directly opposite the Polish parliament, which has failed to fulfill its promises to soften strict legislation.

Unlike a regular medical clinic, this center provides women access to various resources, including abortion pills, as well as a space where they can receive support or undergo a pharmacological abortion.

In Poland, abortion is only permitted in two cases: when the pregnancy is the result of a crime, such as rape or incest, or when there is a threat to the mother's life or health. Nevertheless, no law punishes women who have an abortion independently, for example, by using pills ordered online.

According to the activists, this legal loophole allows them to keep the center operating. Kinga Jelincka noted that 'abortomate' is in a sense a 'trick' around the law.

Assistance with abortion is still punishable by up to three years in prison. Furthermore, Women Help Women added that 'the pills are supplied by a machine operated by an organization based outside of Poland,' so that no one is punished.

The creation of this center is causing protests from conservative Catholic groups.
