Safari season resumes in Assam: Manas and Kaziranga parks open, Pobitor to open in October

The wildlife season in the forests of Assam has resumed after a temporary closure due to the monsoon season, difficult road conditions, and measures to ensure the safety of wild animals. The wildlife tourist season in Assam has now begun.

Manas Park opened its doors to tourists on October 2. The following day, October 3, visitors began being accepted at Kaziranga National Park. As for the Pobitor sanctuary, a little longer wait is required—it will open on October 13. Thus, the entire month of October is a month of activity for the forests of Assam.

Manas National Park, which covers the districts of Baksa and Chirang, started operating on October 2. Annually, tourism activities are suspended here during the monsoon period. With the change of season, the opportunity to see wildlife up close has reappeared, starting with Manas, and then Kaziranga.

Kaziranga National Park was opened to tourists on October 3. This park is located in several districts, including Golaghat and Nagaon, and partially extends into the territories of Bishwanath and Sonitpur. Although Kaziranga is primarily associated with the one-horned antelope, it is one of the largest tourist attractions in Assam, drawing a large number of people from both within the country and abroad each tourist season.

Statistics show high interest in the nature of Assam. In the 2025-26 tourist season, over 468 thousand tourists visited Kaziranga National Park, compared to approximately 406 thousand in the previous year, indicating a significant increase in visitors over the year. Among these more than 468 thousand people were over 437 thousand Indian citizens and more than 30 thousand foreign tourists.

There is also an increase in tourist flow in Manas. In the 2025-26 tourist season, a total of 63,723 people visited Manas National Park, of whom about 59 thousand were Indian citizens and approximately 5 thousand were foreign tourists. Tourist activity here has also increased, and further growth in the number of visitors is expected in the coming months as the new season has started and the forests are once again open for safari.

If you plan to include the Pobitor Wildlife Sanctuary in your tour of Assam, remember the date—October 13. The Pobitor Sanctuary in Morigaon district will be open to tourists on this day. In the last tourist season, 35,371 tourists visited Pobitor. After the opening of all three sites—Manas, Kaziranga, and Pobitor—the main wildlife tourist route of Assam will be fully activated.

The Minister of Environment and Forests of Assam, Jayant Mallabaruah, provided information on the schedule for the reopening of these tourist sites. The suspension of tourist movement in the forests during monsoons is an annual practice that takes into account the condition of the forests, roads, and the safety of wild animals. As the monsoon period draws to a close, the tourist season begins, and thus activity has resumed in the forests of Assam.

Therefore, if you are planning a trip to Assam, you should note the following dates: Manas National Park opened on October 2, Kaziranga National Park opened on October 3, and Pobitor Sanctuary will open on October 13. Data from past seasons shows a steady increase in interest in visiting the forests of Assam, and it is expected that many tourists from different parts of the country will arrive this year too. The forests are ready, the safari is ready, and the new wildlife tourism season in Assam has started.

Tiger Bandhavgarh Sanctuary Reopens After Three-Month Break; Tigress Spotted on First Day

The new tourist season at Tiger Bandhavgarh Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh state began on October 1st after a three-month pause during the monsoon period. Jungle safaris resumed in the main area of the sanctuary on this day. Before the gates opened, an official worship ceremony was held to ensure the safety of wild animals and the successful running of the season. Tourists were traditionally greeted by park and forest service staff, and the Tala gates were decorated.

The first day was memorable for visitors as tourists near the Siddh Baba area were able to spot a tigress freely moving in its natural habitat. Spectators were amazed by the sight and watched the animal's activity for a long time, capturing the moment with cameras in the safari vehicles. The tigress's visit on the very first day significantly boosted tourist enthusiasm.

Tourist activities in the main area of the sanctuary will run from October 1st to June 30th, while in the buffer zone, they continue year-round. The sanctuary administration has taken all necessary measures to accommodate guests. The process of tourists entering through the three main gates started at the scheduled time. The entry points were decorated with flowers and other decorative elements, and tourists were also briefed on the rules of staying in the park and the necessity of maintaining a safe distance from wild animals.

Bandhavgarh Sanctuary Director, Anupam Sahai, stated that special attention was paid to organizing the safari system and improving the quality of visitor experiences before the start of the new season. This time, the focus is not only on tiger watching but also on providing information about the jungles, wildlife, birds, flora, history, and geographical significance of Bandhavgarh.

In addition to being known for its tigers, Bandhavgarh attracts tourists due to its natural diversity, historical heritage, and local culture. Historical attractions such as ancient caves, temple ruins, and Sheshsaiya enrich the visitor experience. The opportunity to combine jungle safaris with viewing tigers, birds, and Indian cultural heritage makes Bandhavgarh a unique tourist destination.

The number of both domestic and international visitors to Bandhavgarh is constantly growing. According to official data, over five tourist seasons from 2021-22 to 2025-26, 950,177 tourists visited the sanctuary (of which 834,693 were domestic and 115,484 were international), generating a total revenue of 760,132,188 rupees for the state. Year-by-year breakdown shows: 2021-22 — 176,51 tourists (revenue: 12.06 crore rupees); 2022-23 — 185,825 tourists (revenue: 13.89 crore rupees); 2023-24 — 178,926 tourists (revenue: 14.15 crore rupees); 2024-25 — 196,889 tourists (revenue: 16.38 crore rupees); 2025-26 — 212,486 tourists (revenue: 19.50 crore rupees).

Sanctuary Director Anupam Sahai noted that online booking for Bandhavgarh tickets for about a month had been processed long before the start of the new season, indicating high interest and enthusiasm among tourists for this place.

Strict control is maintained over compliance with safari vehicle standards. All jeeps undergo inspection and registration, guaranteeing compliance with documentation, technical condition, and established norms. Furthermore, approximately 195 guides are trained to improve tourist awareness of the jungles and wildlife. As part of the 'Jungle School' program, guides receive information on wild animal tracks, their behavior, bird identification, vegetation, and the history of Bandhavgarh. Additionally, 105 guides are trained in English language and effective communication skills to convey wildlife information in a simple, interesting, and actionable way for visitors from different countries.

Anupam Sahai also assured that safaris will continue despite the presence of wild elephants, as all preparations for the safari have been completed. The priority in the new season is wildlife protection and tourist safety, so guides and drivers have undergone special training.
