Imagine a situation where an image of a crocodile, indistinguishable from the real thing, is created using artificial intelligence (AI). If such an image is sent to a friend as a joke, claiming that a crocodile was actually spotted, and as a result, the police and government officials begin searching, what would happen? This is exactly what happened to one person in Singapore.
This incident occurred in the Pandan waterway in Singapore. According to reports, 30-year-old Lin sent a photo of a crocodile to an acquaintance on August 20, claiming the animal had been sighted in the waterway. The photograph looked so realistic that it was accepted as truth. Subsequently, the information reached the authorities, and a search for the crocodile began. Furthermore, restrictions were placed on water activities in the area, and people engaged in rowing and canoeing were warned.
When the authorities started investigating the case, it was discovered the next day that the crocodile in the picture was not real. In fact, Lin created this photograph using AI. Thus, officials spent an entire day searching for a non-existent animal. Since the crocodile was not found, the case turned to the person who created the image. The police linked the photograph to Lin. Reports also state that he deleted the AI-generated photos and related information from his phone. Following this, charges were filed against him.
Lin is accused of providing false information and obstructing justice. According to available data, he has expressed willingness to plead guilty in court. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for November. Under Singaporean law, if convicted of these charges, he faces imprisonment and a fine. One charge carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, while the other carries up to seven years.
This case demonstrates how convincing images created with AI can be. However, even more significant is the serious damage that can be caused by spreading such images presented as truth without careful consideration. Lin likely did this as a joke, but because of his single photograph, officials had to mobilize to search for a crocodile and halt water activities. That is, creating an image with AI is easy, but misleading someone into believing it is real can become a serious problem.
