Review of Sprigs Cafe in Kloof: A Healthy and Elegant Spot for Breakfast and Lunch

Sprigs Cafe, located in Fields Shopping Centre at 13 Old Main Rd in Kloof, offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed weekend breakfast. This establishment, which has been around for almost thirty years, is known for its dining philosophy that combines healthiness with elegance, and it is owned by twins Claire and Fiona Ross.

Visitors can enjoy rich cappuccino prepared by Claire herself. The breakfast menu features a variety of dishes: from a simple toast with two eggs to a full English breakfast. Moroccan stuffed toast and vegan scramble made from chickpeas and Mediterranean vegetables are also available. Omelets are prepared with pesto, onion, and mozzarella, while French toast and pancakes with apple muesli are served with bacon and maple syrup or yogurt, fresh fruit, and honey.

As side dishes, one can order a Moroccan meat pie with fried potatoes and curry sauce. The reviewer personally tried creamy mushrooms, bacon, and two poached eggs on wholemeal bread, noting the tender yolks beneath a layer of rich mushrooms.

Lunch Menu

When choosing a lunch menu, visitors can opt for light dishes such as chicken liver parfait with apple and camembert sauce, a coronation-style chicken salad with broccoli, fried grapes, red onion, and nuts, or a Mexican vegetable bowl with avocado salsa and nachos. Other options include Thai chicken curry, braised pork with chili-leek and carrots, and salmon patties with slaw.

The sandwich section offers options with ham and Emmental, chicken with pesto mayonnaise, or Mediterranean vegetables and Danish feta. After the main meal, the reviewer ordered the Moroccan meat pie, which was delicious, with good fried potatoes and Cape Malay-style fruit curry, noting its rich and smooth flavor. Desserts followed: the reviewer chose an interesting orange cake with preserved oranges and buttery crumble, while their companion selected a slice of lemon drizzle.

In addition to food, the store has a delicatessen section where one can find lemon curd, pesto mayonnaise, homemade ginger biscuits, and Lorraine quiche. The overall rating for food, service, and atmosphere was 3.5 out of 5. The bill for two came to 531 Rand.
