Durban Loves Delfi event raises funds for Delfi restaurant family after fire

Members of the creative community in Durban are organizing an event called Durban Loves Delfi. It will be a special evening of diverse performances featuring well-known personalities, aimed at supporting the family of the Greek tavern Delfi, which was affected by a fire.

The event will take place at the Milkwood Theatre at Danville Park Girls School on Monday, October 19th, at 7:00 PM. The organizer is Hello Poppy—an NGO led by Jane Lindley-Thomas, which supports the dignity, joy, and emotional well-being of the elderly.

The evening's program will feature the beloved musical trio The Glitter Girls, consisting of Lisa Bobber, Lisl Coppin, and Marion Laudon, as well as renowned South African magician, mentalist, and host Mo Magic and comedian Rory Petzer. Additionally, talented young artists from the International School of Performing Arts will perform.

Members of the creative industry have offered their time and talents to support the Delfi family. Linda Scholz, the school director, provided the Milkwood Theatre, and Black Coffee provided the technical infrastructure. All collected funds will be transferred directly to the family.

The fire started in the rear part of the Greek tavern Delfi and spread throughout the building. The owners and family members of the restaurant, Doddi, Maria, and Manuel Terenes, had lived on the upper floor since 1964.

A family member, Linda Landzanakis, noted that 'the devastating fire on September 3rd took not only the beloved Delfi restaurant but also all their lifelong belongings. Their sixty-year-old home disappeared along with all the wonderful memories. It wasn't just a cafe. It was a home filled with love, kindness, and warmth. They were left with what they had.'

On the day of the incident, Ayaha Godlwana, a 32-year-old chef from Palm Terrace Cafe, became a hero by rescuing Doddi from her room while the fire spread through the upstairs apartment.

Maria shared her feelings: 'We honestly did not expect anything like this. Seeing artists give their time, and so many people gathering for us, was incredibly touching. After the fire, we were overwhelmed by the love and generosity of the community. We are very grateful to every person who reached out, helped, and supported us.'

Tickets for the event cost 220 or 200 Rand and are available through Webtickets.

Savanna Comedy Festival concludes national tour, cementing South Africa as the world capital of comedy

The first Savanna Serves Bafunny Bafunny: South Africa’s Festival of Comedy has successfully concluded its national tour. This festival, led by Trevor Noah and hosted by Eugene Khosa, attracted over 20,000 spectators across the country, including three sold-out nights in three cities.

The national tour covered Tshwane (PTA), Durban (eThekwini), and Cape Town. The event demonstrated that life in Mzansi is a complete comedic show script, transforming the everyday frustrations of South Africans into collective therapy that elicits bursts of laughter.

Throughout the national tour in the three cities, Trevor Noah and Eugene Khosa performed alongside other comedians: Lernmor Jonasi, Mbali Gudazi, Tabiso Mkhlongo, Rory Petzer, Nonto R, Punch Gasela, and Lindi Johnson. The performances of these comedians in packed arenas reflected daily life in South Africa, showing it like a mirror.

The main participant, Trevor Noah, received thunderous applause for mocking situations, such as when security guards at local tollgates and shopping malls ridiculed him for presenting a new New York driver's license, which was recognized as a typical South African phenomenon. Eugene Khosa also made a sensation by mocking men who insist on wearing full 'uniforms' (pyjamas), adding that putting on a robe over it was like going on a night shift of sleep.

No spectator was immune to Eugene's jokes, whether it was a man who looked like he was being dragged to the show against his wife's will, or a father and son who resembled each other. Eugene joked that Durban has such a quirk, and the audience approved this statement with loud laughter.

Humor extended to the venue corridors, where patrolling comedian referees noticed spectators in amusing domestic infractions, issuing them 'Yellow Cards'. An example of such an infraction was Savanna ordering for themselves and forgetting about Savanna 0.0 for the designated driver. The public reaction was pure comedy: spectators welcomed, dramatically pleaded 'not guilty', and celebrated the appearance of their Yellow Cards on the venue screens, receiving exclusive Savanna x Bafunny Bafunny merchandise.

Yon Jacobs, assistant brand manager for Savanna Premium Cider, noted that 'Savanna has supported South African comedy for years, from small club corners to the Savanna Comics' Choice Comedy Awards'. He added that 'the gathering of Captain Trevor and the Bafunny Bafunny team was our way of celebrating the dry, uncompromising humor that unites us all.'
