Crocworld relaunches as family adventure and nature conservation center

Crocworld, a well-known attraction located on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, is announcing a new chapter. The center has been relaunched as Crocworld Adventure & Conservation Centre, focusing on combining conservation efforts and education with active recreation and family activities.

Since its appearance in the South Coast tourism landscape in 1985, when the crocodile named Henry arrived at the center, the attraction has continued to evolve over more than four decades, maintaining ecological education and conservation as the core of its operations.

Susan Badat, manager of Crocworld Adventure & Conservation Centre, expressed enthusiasm for the numerous changes at Crocworld, some of which are already implemented and others are forthcoming. She emphasized that despite over 40 years of experience in Scottburgh, the center's commitment to wildlife conservation and education remains central, and they continue to grow alongside the community and visitors.

The new direction aims to position Crocworld as a destination for family adventures and nature conservation. A wide range of activities is offered here, including hiking, cycling, wildlife encounters, nature conservation lectures, and tree adventures.

One of the most significant achievements is the expansion of the Crocworld Adventure Trails network. This trail system starts at Crocworld and connects to the wider Renishaw Coastal Precinct and adjacent areas. Over 100 kilometers of routes have been developed and maintained through collaboration with local partners and sports clubs.

Visitors can choose from routes of 5 km, 10 km, 20 km, and 40 km. These sections feature diverse terrain, technical challenges, and scenic views of the coast and countryside. Additionally, cyclists have access to a new bike shop at the center, managed by Badger’s Cycling and Sports Centre. The shop offers bicycle sales, servicing, accessories, clothing, and consultations, serving as a starting point for those using the surrounding trail network.

The cycling facilities can also be used for group rides, temporary trials, sporting events, and other community activities.

Despite the increased focus on adventure, Crocworld insists that nature conservation remains at the heart of its identity. The center has resumed popular nature conservation lectures, described as 'educational and engaging' sessions that make ecological education accessible to visitors of all ages. Local experts are invited to share knowledge and experience, allowing guests to learn more about South African wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation challenges.

Lectures and snake demonstrations have also returned, giving visitors the opportunity to get closer to the country's reptiles, learn about their role in the environment, and dispel common misconceptions. Another attractive service is the return of the juvenile crocodile handling experience, allowing visitors to see these reptiles in controlled conditions.

Active recreation has also expanded to the upper levels. Jikaleza Outdoor Adventures, located near Crocworld, has added a zip line and high ropes course to the growing array of activities at the center. This experience allows visitors to view the coastal surroundings from above, adding a more dynamic element to a day at Crocworld. It is suitable for a wide age range and complements existing wildlife and conservation programs.

Fish Eagle Café continues to be part of the Crocworld experience, offering visitors a place to relax with food and drinks against the backdrop of the surrounding landscape. The café has introduced buffet options on weekends and plans to host special events throughout the year. Crocworld has also resumed booking children's birthdays at Fish Eagle Café. Packages can include meals, treats, and optional park access, allowing families to combine a celebration with an outdoor day.

A Saturday breakfast buffet is held on selected weekends from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, costing R150 for adults and R75 for children under 12; booking is required. The Sunday lunch buffet takes place on the last Sunday of each month from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, requiring booking and a deposit by Thursday prior to the event. The lunch costs R180 for adults and R100 for children aged four to twelve; children under four can use the children's menu.

The relaunch of Crocworld is part of a broader development around the Renishaw Coastal Precinct—a 1300-hectare area that includes Renishaw Hills and the newly opened Restilridge Farm Estate. Development plans for this area include additional recreational and residential facilities, as well as a private school, hospital, shopping center, hotel, and light industrial zone. According to the development plans, approximately 80% of the area will be allocated to nature conservation.

For Crocworld, the new direction integrates various aspects of the South Coast experience: from wildlife study and ecological education to cycling, hiking, family entertainment, and active recreation. In shaping its new identity, the center maintains its long-standing role in nature conservation as a key component of its offering.
