A Cape Town company aims to enable elite hotels to demonstrate that the mattress beneath pristine white linens has been cleaned according to established standards. The Peace of Sleep service, created by CleanMyBed, was launched in South Africa in September as a certification system to ensure sleep hygiene and manage allergies.
The company began a soft launch of the program in March before presenting it at select properties. According to Getaway, Tintswalo Collection became the first group of boutique hotels in South Africa to receive certification across all its locations. Currently, the Peace of Sleep online catalog includes 35 certified properties.
These properties are located in various places, including Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay and Grootbos Forest Lodge in Gansbaai, as well as Chitwa Chitwa in the private Sabi Sand reserve. The catalog also covers guesthouses, student accommodation, and two school dormitories, showing that the concept extends beyond standard five-star hotel services.
CleanMyBed requires that the property selects a service schedule, uses accredited operators for mattress treatment, and maintains a public audit trail for every visit. Each room receives a signed certificate and a QR code that provides information on the property's current status, the date of the next certification, and records of work performed. If the service period expires, the online certification is automatically voided.
Records track data on each mattress, operator, and team, equipment serial numbers, extraction output, UV-C exposure time, and signatures from both the operator and the client. The dry process utilizes HEPA filtration and UV-C treatment, with the company claiming that rooms can remain available during the procedure.
Peace of Sleep offers three tiers: 'Assured' requires quarterly treatment of every guest mattress and annual recertification. The 'Distinguished' tier involves a phased service schedule and deeper auditing, while the 'Signature' tier has the highest frequency and may include approval from the South African Allergy Foundation.
Founder and CEO of CleanMyBed, Charlie Wright, believes that hotels have spent years focusing on polishing all visible aspects of the stay, leaving the mattress without comparable verification. Wright told Getaway: 'Every part of the guest experience is scrutinized, except this one. Properties have healthy food menus, aromatherapy, and mood lighting, all aimed at enhancing the guest experience. But none of them offer a specific or demonstrable guarantee about what mattress they will be sleeping on.'
The certification has plans to expand beyond South Africa. CleanMyBed reports that its network of operators is active here and in Denmark, and the same system is intended to support new territories as licensees join. Wright believes that the Cape Town boutique hotel market has become a place for developing and testing this standard, rather than just another destination importing a foreign wellness mark. Luxury sold thread counts for years; Peace of Sleep now sells the audit trail underneath it.
