South African Company Launches Global Hospitality Certification Focused on Allergies and Sleep

The Cape Town-based company has introduced what it calls the world's first hospitality certification specifically focused on managing allergies and sleep hygiene.

The Peace of Sleep service was launched in South Africa in September 2026. The creators assert that one of the most crucial aspects of a hotel stay—which has remained overlooked in formal guest wellness standards—is the sleeping environment.

According to the company, approximately one in three people suffers from some form of allergen sensitivity. While hotels typically have established standards for cleaning, linens, and evening service, there has traditionally been no comparable certification specifically addressing sleep conditions.

Charlie Wright, CEO and founder of Peace of Sleep, notes: 'Every part of the guest experience is scrutinized, except this one. Properties offer wellness menus, aromatherapy, and mood lighting, all aimed at the guest experience. But almost none provide a specific or demonstrable guarantee regarding the bed the guest will sleep in.'

Peace of Sleep is based on a proven allergen management process designed for use in hotels and other hospitality venues. This process is dry and chemically clean, and it can be conducted without taking rooms out of service, allowing properties to continue selling rooms during the procedure.

The certification is not a one-time accreditation; it includes continuous monitoring. Properties can work towards achieving one of three certification levels: Assured, Distinguished, and Signature. These levels are determined by the frequency of service, providing hotels a path from initial certification to more frequent ongoing maintenance.

The company states that the goal is for this certification to become a recognizable mark that properties can display as evidence of their commitment to guest well-being. Wright emphasizes: 'This is not just a promise; it is proof that guest well-being is taken as seriously as everything else in the property.'

The certification has already gained traction in South Africa's luxury hospitality segment. The company reports that Tintswalo Collection is the first boutique group in the country to receive Peace of Sleep certification across all its properties.

Peace of Sleep was soft-launched in March 2026 and is currently being presented to a limited number of invited properties before a wider rollout. Although international hospitality standards are often developed in established tourist hubs, Peace of Sleep was developed and tested within the Cape Town boutique sector.

The company now intends to expand this certification beyond South Africa, positioning it as a potential new international standard for hotels and other accommodation providers. Wright argues: 'There is no reason why the next hospitality standard must come from London, Dubai, or New York. We created it here, we tested it here, and we proved it here first.'

For travelers, this certification could be another factor when choosing accommodation, especially for guests sensitive to allergens or those who highly value sleep and well-being while traveling. Peace of Sleep is currently accepting inquiries from interested properties seeking certification.
