Vusi Moyo to lead Sharks attack against Leinster champions at Kings Park

Vusi Moyo, who has progressed from a schoolboy to a Springbok national team player, will face one of the most serious tests of his career on Saturday. He will be in charge of leading the Sharks' attack in the match against Leinster, which will take place at Kings Park.

The young player is 20 years old. Just eighteen months ago, he was finishing school at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg. During this time, he has achieved significant success: becoming a junior world champion, debuting for the Sharks, and earning his first cap for the Springboks.

Now, he is entrusted with managing the Sharks' attack in the confrontation with the reigning URC champions. His approach to this task is described as refreshingly simple. Moyo stated: 'For me, this week is simply about taking responsibility and believing in what the coaches have prepared over the week.'

He also noted that the return of Springboks players has changed the atmosphere in the Sharks, as Andre Esterhuizen, Thomas du Toit, and Edwin van der Merwe are in the starting lineup, while Ethan Hooker, Ox Nche, and Eben Etzebeth are on the bench.

Moyo is particularly happy about the return of captain Esterhuizen to the inside centre position. 'Andre was there with me during my debut for the Sharks, and his return is very exciting,' he shared.

Without letting Leinster's status distract him from the task, Moyo mentioned that he will be facing Ireland's stars: Sam Prendergast, Robbie Henshaw, and Tommy O'Brien. He emphasized: 'We are not focusing on what Leinster can do, but on what we can achieve.' He added that the Sharks team has set high standards for itself that they aim to meet.

This mature outlook is characteristic of a player whose adult career is just beginning. Moyo graduated from KES after certification in 2024. Before joining the Sharks, he represented the Lions team at the under-18 level. In 2025, he helped the junior Springboks win the Rugby U20 World Cup, becoming the top scorer with 63 points.

Moyo's breakthrough at the Sharks occurred in May when he first started against Zebre at Kings Park. In this match, which ended in a 54-19 victory, he scored a touchdown and converted five extra points, demonstrating a composure that already drew attention to him as a promising player.

This was followed by his call-up to the Springboks. Moyo debuted for them against Wales at Kings Park in July, at only 20 years old. Last week, he started in the first URC Sharks match against Ospreys, converting all four extra points in the first half and adding two penalties in the second half, leading to a 41-24 victory.

Now he faces Leinster, but Moyo views this game not as an opportunity for self-promotion, but as a duty to improve his teammates' play. 'I think the competition within the team is healthy, and you want to stay sharp,' he said. He also noted that his coach, JP (Pietersen), choosing him demonstrates great trust.

This competition is especially high in the winger position, where Moyo worked with Jordan Hendricks and Siya Masuku. 'Even if Jordan and Siya aren't in the squad, they still help and give advice on how to do things,' he reported.

Moyo clearly understands his main task against Leinster: 'My job is to organize the forwards and backfielders so that they move forward.' He concluded that it is a matter of personal responsibility and knowledge of the details.

Sharks use South African national players for match against Leinster at Kings Park

The Sharks squad has included South African national players in their starting lineup to face the defending champions Leinster at Kings Park stadium on Saturday evening.

United Rugby Championship

The Sharks have quickly integrated their strength by returning Andre Esterhuizen to captain a strong team against Leinster. The match is scheduled for 18:30, and all six current Sharks players from the South African national team have been named in the starting 23 after returning from international duties.

The starting six includes Esterhuizen, Thomas du Toit, and Edwill van der Merwe, while Ox Nche, Eben Etzebeth, and Ethan Hooker provide serious firepower on the bench. This is a significant addition of experience for the Sharks team, which impressively started the URC season by defeating the Ospreys 41-24 last week.

However, Leinster presents a completely different challenge. The Irish giants arrive in Durban with a squad rich in international quality, giving the Sharks an ideal opportunity to assess the progress made during the three-month pre-season period. The returning South African national players only arrived in South Africa on Tuesday but were ready to participate immediately in the game.

Team captain Fepsy Buthelezi believes that the match will show whether the tough pre-season training will start yielding consistent results. He noted that the start of the campaign against the Ospreys was very positive and benefited the group. Buthelezi added that the team analyzed its game and believes it could have performed better at certain moments, but overall it was a good start.

He emphasized the importance of the upcoming week to demonstrate how far the group has advanced and what has been discussed around the team. Buthelezi also mentioned that attack is part of their game, which they have worked hard on, and thanks to Scott Matie's return, the group reacted well to his influence. 'We scored amazing tries, and that is a really positive point,' he stated.

The Sharks demonstrated many attacking ambitions against the Ospreys, and Buthelezi believes this is an area where they can continue to develop. The Sharks squad for the match against Leinster includes: Luan Gilloomie, Edwill van der Merwe, Jurenzo Julius, Andre Esterhuizen (captain), Lily Bester, Wusi Moyo, Jayden Hendricks, Nick Hatton, Manu Tsituka, Fepsy Buthelezi, Darren Landsberg, Jason Jenkins, Vincent Koch, Esetchu Mnebelele. Reserves: Ethan Bester, Ox Nche, Hanro Jacobs, Eben Etzebeth, Matt Romao, Ivan van Zyl, Zeketelo Siyaya, Ethan Hooker. Players who will not be available: Bongani Mbonambi, Eduan Swart, Emile van Harden, Fez Mbata, Hendre Stassen, Jaco Williams, Yannis Potgiter, Jordan Hendricks, Makazole Maphimmi, Murray Koster, PK Sobale, Stefan Levis, Trevor Nyakane, Vincent Tsituka, Yaw Penxe.

Mosimane demands more goals from Mofokeng despite his talent being hailed as a 'gift from God'

The recent move of Relobokhile Mofokeng to Europe could serve as a model for the South African national team (Bafana Bafana) and young South African players. Pitso Mosimane believes that Mofokeng possesses innate talent, but insists that the player must convert this ability into a higher number of goals scored.

Mofokeng demonstrated his abilities by scoring two goals in the 5-0 match against Eritrea in Cairo. These goals were his first senior international goals in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, in which South Africa secured its second victory out of two.

Before the match against Eritrea, Mofokeng's only goal for the national team was scored in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, which was reviewed. As a result, the 21-year-old footballer played 17 matches for the national team without scoring before finally breaking the drought against Eritrea, and Mosimane believes that goals should now become a regular part of his game.

Mosimane demands more goals

Mosimane stated that Relo is an outstanding player who demonstrates the reasons for his move to Europe, and that he scores there, which is the most important thing. He emphasized: "Relo must score goals."

After moving from Orlando Pirates to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, Mofokeng did indeed start scoring. In nine matches across all competitions for the Belgian club, he scored four goals and provided one assist, including three goals in the Belgian Pro League and one goal in his debut Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen.

The coach noted: "We know what he can do with the ball, he is a magician, a smart player, but I told him that he needs to score goals because dozens score goals, not just provide assists or play between the lines; you have to score goals, but we are not teaching him anything, he is simply a gift from God."

Mofokeng fully confirmed Mosimane's words in the match against Eritrea. After hitting the crossbar at the beginning of the match, he opened the scoring in the 19th minute following a pass from Oswin Apollos. He then doubled the lead shortly before halftime, receiving the ball in the penalty area, beating defenders, and sending the ball into the far corner.

This individual class has become Mofokeng's trademark, but Mosimane wishes for the young player to combine this artistry with greater consistency in front of the goal.

The South African national team showed a five-star performance in Cairo. The national team coach had previously spoken about the importance of developing a new generation ahead of the 2030 World Cup, and Mofokeng is expected to be an important part of this group. Nevertheless, Mosimane's immediate task is simple: to continue showing productivity. Mofokeng started doing this in Belgium and impressively opened his scoring for the South African national team. Now the coach wants the goals to keep coming.

JP Pietersen advises young Sharks players to embrace the excitement before the URC season start against Ospreys

JP Pietersen, coach of the Sharks team, believes that pre-match excitement is an important element for the young squad preparing for the new season. He urged the Durban players to accept the upcoming event rather than overthinking it, emphasizing that composure and adaptability are as crucial as months of preparation for the new season.

British Rugby Championship

Pietersen noted that the Sharks team will face a test of nerves during the match at Kings Park on Saturday. He stated that despite thorough three-month preseason training, rugby is a sport that cannot be entirely planned, and adaptation to game conditions is always required.

The coach stressed that the main task on match day is to control nerves and remain focused on the field. He reported that although the team is in good shape, there have been changes in the squad. Vusi Moyo has taken a spot in the starting ten after Jordan Hendricks' injury.

Pietersen expressed confidence in the young backline of the Sharks, where Vusi Moyo plays at ten, and Jurenzo Julius and Murray Koster form a new partnership in the midfield. Koster returned to Durban after four years spent in Japan, and Julius, known as 'The Boogey Man,' is one of the team's most promising young talents.

Moyo's selection at the halfback position was due to Jordan Hendricks, who participated in the last Sharks vs. Lions preseason match, being excluded from the squad due to a minor injury. Pietersen noted that Vusi demonstrated promising results throughout the preseason, leading the group well over three months.

In Pietersen's view, the young attacking players can provide energy and speed, while the forwards bring necessary experience to stabilize the game. He highlighted the combination of experience and youth in the team. The attacking line has much talent, energy, and speed, backed by the experience of players like Vincent Koch, Phepsi Buthelezi, Nick Hatton, and Manu Tshituka.

The Sharks team also has a strong bench, featuring experienced Springboks Jason Jenkins and Ivan van Zyl, ready to fulfill any role the game demands.

Sharks vs. Ospreys Match

Sharks will also have to face the Ospreys team, which reached the initial round through an unusual route. The Welsh side spent a week of preparation at high altitude in Johannesburg, then arrived in Durban on Friday, using the conditions of Highveld to improve their physical fitness before Saturday's game.

Pietersen speculated that they chose the high-altitude route to test their bodies, as they have a match against the Lions scheduled for the second week. The Sharks' central line will face an interesting challenge from Australian newcomers Ospreys—Lawson Creighton and Lalakai Foketi. Although Marika Korobete, a former Wallabies winger, was supposed to strengthen the visitors' attack, she withdrew from the squad due to visa issues.

Pietersen expects Foketi and Creighton to bring attacking instincts characteristic of Australian rugby into the game. He noted that both players are ready for the challenge. Foketi comes from the Chiefs, and judging by the Australian style of play in Super Rugby, they enjoy moving and retaining possession over several phases, which will be something to watch in the match.

Sharks vs. Ospreys Squad

The Sharks squad includes 15 Luan Giliomee, 14 Suleiman Hartzenberg, 13 Jurenzo Julius, 12 Murray Koster, 11 Litelihle Bester, 10 Vusi Moyo, 9 Jaden Hendrikse, 8 Nick Hatton (c), 7 Manu Tshituka, 6 Phepsi Buthelezi, 5 Darrien Landsberg, 4 Corne Rahl, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Eduan Swart, 1 Phatu Ganyane. Reserves: 16 Esethu Mnebelele, 17 Nemo Roelofse, 18 Hanro Jacobs, 19 Jason Jenkins, 20 Matt Romao, 21 Ivan van Zyl, 22 Siya Masuku, 23 Zekhethelo Siyaya.
