Christa Pike is in critical condition after two failed execution attempts

Christa Pike is in critical condition after suffering two unsuccessful execution attempts. Spivey informed the press that there is no exact data on her prognosis or health status, only that she remains alive.

Pike's defense reported that they were unable to visit the 50-year-old woman, who is receiving essential medical care in the hospital. Spivey, who witnessed the execution attempt, expressed great anguish, saying that what happened the night before haunts him.

He detailed that at least seven needles were used to administer the lethal injection over an hour, and he noted that at least one of these needles appeared bent when removed from her arm. Spivey described the event as cruel and torturous, recalling that Pike had already faced circulatory problems and difficulties with blood draws throughout her life.

The lawyers argued that these conditions were one of the reasons she refused the current method of execution, having requested an alternative. Specifically, Pike asked to be executed by a firing squad composed exclusively of women, although this option was not feasible at the time.

Spivey clarified that her fear was not death itself, but rather facing a long, painful, and traumatic death, which effectively occurred, but without her passing away.

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when both were 18 and 19 years old, respectively. Although two other people participated in the killing of Slemmer, she was the only one to receive the death sentence.

On Wednesday, she survived the two doses of the lethal injection. After the incident, she was taken to a hospital, though not immediately, and nearly 24 hours later, she was still alive and in serious condition.

Spivey mentioned that she was provided with an emergency number to contact the Tennessee Supreme Court in case of any complications with the execution, but when he called, it went to voicemail, according to NBC.

As a result of the incident, the state governor, Bill Lee, suspended all executions for the current year and requested an investigation, a measure the Attorney General agreed to.
