Ideas for reusing old shoes: 5 ways to give a second life to unwanted boots and sneakers

While cleaning the house, people often find old shoes and boots that have not been worn for a long time or have become too worn out. Most people tend to throw such footwear in the trash. However, it is worth pausing before getting rid of them, as even seemingly useless shoes can find a use in home decoration and various household tasks, without significant cost.

A little ingenuity allows old sneakers, boots, and leather shoes to be turned into items that improve the aesthetics of a home. Below is an overview of ways to reuse old shoes instead of disposing of them.

First of all, it should be noted that not all old shoes necessarily need to be thrown away. If the shoes are still sturdy, but the sole, heel, or some small detail is damaged, they can be repaired by a cobbler and worn again. This is especially true for leather shoes or boots, where the sole or heel can be replaced. However, athletic shoes are recommended to be used for a short time, as their necessary support may decrease over time.

It is important to carry out repairs in a timely manner if the heel starts to wear down or the sole comes off; this will help extend the service life of the shoes and reduce future expenses. Additionally, after coming home, the shoes should be cleaned with a dry cloth, especially in rainy and cold weather, to remove dirt and moisture, preventing premature deterioration.

If the shoes are so worn out that they cannot be worn, they should still not be thrown away. There are many options for their creative use at home:

  • Turning sneakers into pots: Old fabric sneakers that are unsuitable for wearing can be used as small planters. By filling the shoes with soil and planting small plants in them, you can create an original and creative decorative element for a balcony, window, or garden, especially suitable for flowering plants.
  • Using tall boots as umbrella stands: Tall rubber or old boots can be placed near the door. They are excellent for storing umbrellas and can also serve as supports for long gardening tools or other items that are difficult to hold upright.
  • Creating unique bookends from heavy shoes: Heavy old boots or leather shoes can be cleaned and placed on a bookshelf. Placing these items on both sides of the books allows them to function as bookends, keeping the books in place and giving the shelf a unique look.
  • Making a doorstop from a sole: Even the rubber sole of an old boot is not useless. It can be cut out and attached to the bottom of the door to prevent it from closing accidentally. Thus, even a small part of the shoe can be useful around the house.
  • Renewing the appearance of old shoes: If the shoes look outdated but still retain their strength, they can be given a fresh look. This can be done using fabric paint, new laces, patches, or high-quality shoe cream.
