The University of São Paulo (USP) secured the runner-up position among the most renowned higher education institutions in Latin America for the second consecutive year. This result was presented in the latest edition of the annual survey conducted by the consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds, as disclosed this Thursday (1).
In the regional leadership, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (UC) maintained the first place. The study analyzed a total of 517 universities distributed across 27 nations in the region.
USP's position was supported by first place in three important metrics: international research network, number of articles per professor, and web impact. Furthermore, the institution achieved the maximum score in the criteria of academic reputation and employer reputation.
USP's good performance in this edition reaffirms its scientific and academic prestige, as well as its potential to contribute to area development. Its maintenance in second place in QS Latin America consolidates its relevance among the highest-performing universities in the region.
Regarding national representation, Brazil was the country with the largest number of ranked universities, totaling 137 institutions. Colombia and Mexico followed with 70 and 69 universities, respectively. Within the top ten group, Brazil has USP, in addition to Unicamp, UFRJ, and Unesp.
Brazilian universities showed varied movements in this survey. Unesp, for example, managed to advance, moving from seventh to sixth place. Overall, 12 Brazilian universities are among the top 50.
USP's success is also noted in other international evaluations published this year. In the THE World University Ranking, the university reached 141st place, entering the group of the top 150 global institutions for the first time.
