Flying Dutchman Funicular in Cape Point Reopens After Modernization

The famous Cape Point funicular, known as the Flying Dutchman, has resumed operation after undergoing major repairs and significant upgrades to its control system. It restarted service on Thursday, October 1st, restoring access to the peninsula's upper viewing platforms.

This 585-meter route transports visitors from the lower station towards the lighthouse, offering views of Dias Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Point reports that the updated system is designed to enhance the funicular's reliability and performance.

Thanks to a magnetic drive that uses 50% less electricity, the funicular provides a quiet ride. Notably, the Flying Dutchman began operations in December 1996 and is currently the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa.

The funicular's name is linked to the legendary ghost ship, which is fitting for Cape Point, where 26 shipwrecks have been recorded. Two passenger carriages are named after vessels associated with these wrecks: Thomas T. Tucker and Nolloth. The funicular uses two counterbalanced carriages, each accommodating 40 passengers, and serves approximately 378,000 visitors annually.

The tubular track system was developed using a South African engineering innovation attributed to Peter Kuesel of Tubular Track.

Cape Point, located in the southern part of Table Mountain National Park, offers guests much more than just a visit to the lighthouse. This reserve is home to the Cape Mountain zebra, eland, and diverse local birdlife. Visitors can also explore shipwreck trails, swim in tidal pools at Boulders Beach and Boulders Bay, and visit the Bouldersfontein Visitor Centre.

From October to March, Flying Dutchman operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The current adult fare is 115 Rand for a return trip or 100 Rand for a one-way trip; this rate is valid until October 31, 2026. Visitors are advised to book funicular tickets online before their visit.
