Changes to traffic regulations have come into force in Spain, affecting users of scooters, motorcycles, taxi drivers, and cyclists.
Regarding scooters, the following restrictions are now in place: their use is prohibited for individuals under 15 years old and without a helmet. Furthermore, scooter users are required to wear a reflective vest at night; for professionals, such as couriers, this requirement has become permanent. A fine of 200 euros is stipulated for violating these rules.
As for routes, scooter movement is permitted outside city centers, but only on specially designated lanes, such as bike paths, separate from motorized vehicles.
All exceptions allowing cyclists to ride on intercity roads without a helmet have also been abolished. Cyclists and motorcycle drivers using their vehicles for work purposes are now obliged to constantly wear a helmet and a reflective vest.
The new norms for motorcycles allow them to drive on the right shoulder of roads in traffic jams, but the maximum speed must be 30 kilometers per hour. It is important to note that motorcycle drivers' helmets must be certified by official bodies, and this rule will only take effect from October 1, 2027.
Additionally, starting today, drivers of cars and other vehicles overtaking a cyclist on an intercity road are required to reduce their speed by at least 20 kilometers per hour below the established limit for that road.
