Razorpay has implemented the ability to use Apple Pay for making payments both online and in physical stores across India. This allows eligible customers to complete transactions using their device's Face ID, Touch ID, or password, instead of manually entering card details or waiting for a One-Time Password (OTP).
This payment method is now available for businesses such as Zepto, ixigo, IndiGo, Tata 1mg, and JioMart. This move aligns with the evolution of digital authentication in India, which is moving beyond SMS-based one-time passwords.
In September 2025, the Reserve Bank of India introduced a system allowing payment operators to use alternative authentication mechanisms for digital transactions, and this system came into effect in April 2026.
With the activation of Apple Pay in Razorpay, users can select this payment option during checkout, review the transaction details, and confirm it on their Apple device. Cards saved in Apple Wallet can be used without the need to manually enter card details or wait for an OTP.
For example, when purchasing headphones from Zepto, a customer can choose Apple Pay, select a card from Apple Wallet, and confirm the payment via Face ID, bypassing the need to enter card details or wait for an OTP. A similar experience is possible in supported stores: simply hold an iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible payment terminal and confirm the purchase on the device.
Apple Pay uses tokenized card credentials, meaning that the actual card number of the customer is not transmitted to the business during the transaction. This provides an additional layer of fraud protection and may reduce the risk of chargebacks.
For commercial entities, the integration means that eligible merchants using Razorpay can offer Apple Pay without needing to create and maintain a separate checkout process, provided they meet the inclusion requirements. Razorpay securely routes transactions between Apple Pay, card networks, and issuing banks, processing the internal payment after it is authorized by the customer.
Rahul Kotari, Chief Operating Officer of Razorpay, noted: 'Payment should be the easiest part of the purchase, not the hardest. People expect every experience on their mobile devices and at payment points to be fast and easy, and online payments through checkout should not be different.' He added that 'Apple Pay removes much of this friction, and with Razorpay, businesses don't need to rebuild anything to offer it. It fits perfectly into the checkout process they already use, backed by the reliability and scale that thousands of Indian enterprises rely on. For merchants, this means faster checkouts and more successful payments.'
Apple Pay is available on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. Additionally, it can be used on PCs through browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.
