Do Not Ignore Cough in Changing Climate: Signs Requiring Medical Attention

With changes in weather, many people encounter coughing problems. Usually, in such cases, people take expectorants on their own. Some experience relief, while others' cough persists for several days. Doctors explain that coughing is a natural protective mechanism of the body designed to expel mucus, dust, irritants, and microbes from the respiratory tract.

A cough caused by a common cold, allergy, or mild respiratory infection usually goes away on its own, and there is no need to worry about it. However, sometimes a cough that seems minor can be a sign of a more serious illness. Therefore, it is crucial to know when this symptom should not be neglected.

Dr. Vivek Nangia, Head of Pulmonology at Max Hospital in Saket, told Aajtak.in about this issue. He emphasized that if five specific symptoms appear along with the cough, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Firstly, if the cough lasts for three to four weeks. Dr. Vivek notes that if the cough starts and continues for three to four weeks, it indicates that it is not ordinary. This may suggest a serious infection in the body, including asthma, pneumonia, or tuberculosis. With such a prolonged cough, one should consult a doctor immediately; a specialist can accurately diagnose the condition using X-rays and other tests.

Secondly, if the cough produces phlegm containing blood. The appearance of a large amount of phlegm during a cough should not be ignored, especially if blood is visible in it. Hemoptysis can be a sign of a respiratory infection, bronchiectasis, or tuberculosis. In some cases, it may also indicate a lung tumor, especially in smokers. If blood reappears, a medical examination must be urgently undergone.

Thirdly, if the cough is accompanied by difficulty breathing or wheezing. Attention should be paid to breathing problems, chest tightness, wheezing, or reduced ability to exercise without an apparent reason. These signs may indicate asthma, COPD, pneumonia, or other heart and lung diseases. Sudden or excessive shortness of breath, especially if accompanied by chest pain, blue lips, confusion, or decreased oxygen levels, requires immediate medical assistance.

Fourthly, if there is fever, weight loss, or night sweats. Viral infections usually resolve on their own. However, if the cough is accompanied by persistent or frequent fever, profuse night sweating, loss of appetite, severe fatigue, or unexplained weight loss, further testing should be conducted.

Fifthly, attention should be paid to a change in the nature of the cough without an obvious reason. One should pay close attention to a cough that suddenly becomes more frequent, deeper, or painful, or where the amount of phlegm increases, or its overall character changes. This is particularly relevant for smokers or former smokers. Increased attention is also required for people over 40 years old or those frequently exposed to tobacco smoke, air pollution, or dust in the workplace.

IGAS launches investigation into deaths in elderly homes in Estremoz following Influenza A outbreak

The General Health Inspectorate (IGAS) has initiated an investigation to analyze how residents of an elderly home in Estremoz were cared for, following an Influenza A outbreak that resulted in the death of six people.

In response to Lusa, the General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS) clarified that the objective of this inquiry is to evaluate both the care provided and the overall organization. This process was formally started on Wednesday.

Additionally, the investigation aims to ascertain various aspects, such as the clinical monitoring of residents at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Veiros Elderly Home, located in Estremoz, in the Évora district. Infection prevention and control practices, referral to hospital care, and coordination between the institution and involved health entities will also be examined.

The day before, the Local Health Unit of Central Alentejo (ULSAC) confirmed the death of one of the three residents who were hospitalized, raising the total number of deaths to six. ULSAC specified that this resident had been diagnosed with Influenza A virus infection.

Data indicated that four of the residents died while in the hospital, and the other two died within the premises of the home itself. ULSAC also reported that the Public Health Department is maintaining epidemiological monitoring of the situation, verifying compliance with protocols such as infection control, hygiene, isolation, and use of personal protective equipment.

Concurrently, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) has also opened an inquiry regarding the deaths of these residents, although no defendants have been charged so far.
