University of Cape Town returns to the top 150 global university ranking

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again entered the list of the world's top 150 universities, which serves as an additional reason to celebrate its international recognition. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, UCT secured joint 147th place, having risen from joint 164th place in the previous edition. Furthermore, it is the highest-ranked institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The latest rankings, published on September 30, cover 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories. UCT's current position is the best result in seven years and marks its return to the global top 150 for the first time since 2020.

For the city of Cape Town, where UCT campuses are integrated into the urban environment itself, this achievement holds significance beyond mere numerical indicators in the international table. It strengthens the city's reputation as an attractive destination for students, researchers, and academics from around the world.

UCT is among the five South African universities featured in the global top 500. Other South African universities also showed their results: the University of the Witwatersrand ranked between 301–325, followed by Stellenbosch University in the 326–350 range, and the University of Johannesburg in the 351–375 range. Pretoria University was placed in the 451–500 range.

South Africa's overall presence in the rankings has also increased: in 2027, the country has 17 universities listed, compared to 13 in the previous edition. Among Sub-Saharan African countries, the number of institutions included in the ranking has increased from 55 to 69.

UCT's achievement comes as universities outside traditional higher education centers in North America and Europe continue to gain ground. Oxford University maintained the number one spot for the eleventh consecutive year, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology following closely behind.

For local residents and visitors, UCT remains an integral part of Cape Town, often taken for granted; its campuses are situated on the slopes of Table Mountain, and thousands of students pass through the city annually.

Three Macau universities maintain or improve positions in global rankings

Three higher education institutions in Macau presented positive results in recent rankings, either maintaining their previous positions or achieving significant improvements.

The University of Macau managed to maintain a similar placement to the last edition, ranking 154th globally. Meanwhile, the Macau University of Science and Technology preserved its 2026 ranking, holding the 269th position.

The greatest evolution was observed at the University of Macau City, which advanced from a group between 601st and 800th places to the range between 451st and 500th places.

Following the release of the ranking, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) attributed these results to the investment made by the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region in advancing higher education.

This body reported that local authorities are actively promoting the creation of the International Education University City and fostering collaborative training programs with foreign universities, all aligned with national strategies aimed at developing qualified professionals.

In 2025, Macau authorities announced the development of this University City, a campus that will be jointly administered by the University of Macau, the Macau Polytechnic University, and the Macau Tourism University. The first classes at this new location began this August.

With a financial contribution of 18 billion yuan (equivalent to 2.3 billion euros), this University City is strategically located in Hengqin, a special economic zone adjacent to the territory. This area was established by the central Chinese government as part of efforts to help Macau diversify its economy beyond the gaming industry.

A recent report by the Macau Government highlighted that Chinese authorities aim for this project to meet the growing demand for university spots in China, providing young Chinese people with an educational experience comparable to studying abroad, but without needing to leave the country.

In this context, the project plans to establish partnerships with universities in Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Switzerland, anticipating the implementation of joint courses and dual degrees, such as clinical medicine courses in partnership with the University of Lisbon or tourism programs with institutions from Australia and Europe.

Additionally, the DSEDJ declared that it will continue to boost the internationalization of higher education in Macau, encouraging the holding of conferences and other international academic activities in the territory and seeking to strengthen the connection of local universities with the global academic community.
