Durban kicks off summer season with launch of new digital tourist guide

The city of Durban has officially opened its summer tourist season by introducing a new digital initiative. This initiative includes a new QR code designed to make the city's tourism offerings accessible to both visitors and residents.

The Mayor of the city, Etchenkini, council member Kirill Shaba, marked the start of the summer period by holding a launch ceremony at Tyler’s in Umdloti. This event concluded the Month of Tourism and Heritage.

The central element of the launch was the presentation of a new QR code, which provides digital access to Durban's stories, cultural heritage, experiences, and tourism offerings.

Explore Durban with a scan

This QR code is part of the City's efforts to modernize Durban's promotion methods and how visitors obtain information about the city. By scanning the code, users can explore a wide range of urban experiences, including beaches, outdoor recreation spots, as well as cultural heritage, entertainment, cuisine, nature, and adventure opportunities.

Mayor Shaba emphasized that the summer season allows Durban to demonstrate itself as a place that continues to innovate while preserving its unique identity. He stated: 'Durban is a city of experiences, stories, and opportunities. Welcoming visitors this summer, we want them to discover not only our beautiful beaches but also our heritage, culture, cuisine, nature, entertainment, and the many experiences that make Durban a place worth exploring.'

Technology meets tourism

The Mayor noted that this QR code reflects the City's commitment to supporting tourism promotion in line with changing technologies and visitor expectations. He added: 'Technology has changed the way people plan their trips, discover destinations, and share their experiences. Therefore, we are using digital platforms to bring Durban closer to visitors and ensure our tourism offerings are easily accessible.'

Supporting Durban's tourism economy

The summer season is expected to have a positive impact on the local tourism economy by supporting businesses in hospitality, entertainment, retail, transport, events, and related industries. The city also calls on residents to act as ambassadors for Durban by exploring local attractions, supporting tourism businesses, and sharing their experiences on digital platforms.

The launch is part of Etchenkini's efforts to position Durban as a leading tourist destination while creating opportunities for local communities and businesses to benefit from increased visitor activity. As the summer season begins, visitors are encouraged to go beyond traditional sights and discover the stories, people, heritage, natural beauty, and diverse tourism experiences that the city offers. The City's message is clear: Durban is open, Durban is ready, and Durban welcomes you.

Cape Town Pools to Open for School Holidays in September

Public swimming pools in Cape Town will operate daily during the school holidays in September, providing residents and visitors access to municipal facilities from September 23rd to October 5th.

With the arrival of spring and rising temperatures, most pools will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. These extended hours are intended to offer opportunities for recreation, sports, and active leisure during the academic break.

The City of Cape Town confirmed these arrangements in a statement released on Saturday, September 19th, but noted that five facilities will remain closed due to maintenance and renovation work.

The city also provided a schedule for the holiday period and listed the five facilities that will not be open during this time. Among the closed sites are Westridge, Bellville Central, Mnandi, and Athlone, where major repair and upgrade works are underway.

City administration stated that after the completion of the work, these facilities will undergo quality assessments and safety checks before phased reopening. The dates for the reopening of these four pools have not yet been determined.

Vulindela Pool has a different schedule as it will be closed for the summer season while plans for its redesign and reconstruction are being considered. It should be noted that the daily holiday schedule will not extend throughout the rest of the year.

Operating Schedule After Holidays

After October 5th, public pools will switch to a reduced operating schedule until December 1st. Subsequently, facilities will operate from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Wednesdays through Fridays, and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. This means that visitors planning a visit after the school holidays must take into account the altered weekday schedule.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department is also preparing for a busier summer and holiday period, during which seasonal lifeguards are currently being appointed. Councillor Francine Heyman, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Services and Health, emphasized that public pools are part of the city's public recreation infrastructure.

She stated: "Our public swimming pools are important public spaces where families and young people can spend time actively, cool down, and enjoy shared leisure." Heyman also mentioned current investments in the modernization, repair, and maintenance of the entire network.

The city also reminded visitors about the necessity of adhering to pool rules, listening to lifeguards, and constantly supervising children.
