Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs face different challenges ahead of the resumption of the Betway Premiership

The three traditional giants—Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs—have demonstrated their status in the Betway Premiership since the start of the season, remaining undefeated until the first break in the championship. However, despite overall success, each team has areas needing improvement after the season resumes.

Mamelodi Sundowns must strengthen their defense

The Brazilian team has shown high attacking productivity, scoring 19 goals in just eight matches, thanks to a deep attacking squad that includes returning Cassius Mailula and lethal Bryan Leon. Nevertheless, coach Miguel Cardoso expresses dissatisfaction with the team's porous defense. The defense, including number one and captain Ronwen Williams, is too easily breached by opponents, which is a concern given the international defenders available to the coach.

Cardoso regrets the injuries to right-back Juliso Mudau and central defender Keanu Cupido, which have led to defensive instability. However, he cannot rely on injuries indefinitely. It is necessary to ensure the quick and coordinated adaptation of newcomers, such as Tabang Matuludi, who made his debut in the starting lineup against Al Ahli in the Africa and Asia Pacific Cup, which ended in a 2-1 victory.

The resumption of the season after the FIFA break will require Sundowns to participate in the MTN8 final against Pirates, continue their league campaign, start the CAF Champions League group stage, participate in the Carling Knockout, play against USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup, and continue their journey in the Fifa Intercontinental Cup.

Orlando Pirates face a test of squad maturity

Pirates will also face a very tight match schedule, although they will not participate in the Super Cup or the Intercontinental Cup. Nevertheless, balancing domestic and continental football will be a serious test of the 'Sea Robbers' character. In recent months, the team has heavily relied on young and promising players due to departures and injuries among veterans. The immaturity of some of these players caused sleepless nights for coach Abdeslam Wadee, who criticized showmanship over constructive football that promotes greater clinicality in attack.

Some members of the football community have sharply criticized Wadee, considering him too harsh on young players who simply want to enjoy the game and 'embrace the Saffa culture'. However, the Moroccan specialist argues that there is nothing impressive about showmanship, especially when the team desperately needs results. Thus, Wadee is expected to find a middle ground so that players play according to their strengths while adapting to the demands of the game.

Kaizer Chiefs must eliminate costly errors

Meanwhile, Pirates' fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, may remain undefeated, but they have struggled with consistency, drawing matches that were expected to be won easily. The most noticeable obstacle in Chiefs' inconsistent start has been costly errors. Goalkeeper and captain Brandon Petersen made three errors in three league matches against Mamelodi Sundowns, Richards Bay, and Polokwane, and Chiefs failed to win any of these matches.

Although Petersen was the main culprit, experts believe his defense could also have played better to cover him. Petersen sustained an injury shortly before the break, which could prove to be an unexpected boon, as he can use the rest period for self-reflection and working on weaknesses. Other experts suggest that Petersen's shortcomings could be an opportunity for newcomer Renaldo Liner, who should seize this chance and prove why he deserves the starting No. 1 spot over Petersen.

Chiefs, Pirates, and Sundowns will receive a three-week break to polish their deficiencies and hope to return as perfectly tuned machines when the season resumes. This is why all three teams will be closely watched during the remainder of the season.

Ouaddou warns Orlando Pirates about the need to maintain stability after successfully completing the first cycle of the season

Abdeslam Ouaddou has called on the Orlando Pirates team to maintain the level of stability achieved in the next stage of the season, despite the successful completion of the initial cycle.

The 'Pirates' team enters an international break undefeated in 11 matches across all tournaments. However, for Ouaddou, what happens next is the priority. The 'Bucaneers' finished the first cycle by accumulating the maximum number of points after defeating Marumo Gallants 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng stadium on Sunday.

The Moroccan coach believes that maintaining this level will be a real test. He stated: 'This is the end of the first cycle, and we are entering the first international break. We wanted to get the maximum number of points in this cycle and not concede many goals, and we did everything possible to achieve this. This game showed what the Pirates are, and I hope we can maintain this stability when we return.'

Orlando Pirates also hold high positions in the Betway Premiership table, trailing only one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, considering the difference in playing time. Ouaddou noted that the victory on Sunday was not easy, despite the final score. 'Honestly, we won 2-0, but this game was very difficult. This team has energy, and they are very strong, so it was a tough match,' he told SuperSport TV.

The first cycle allowed Ouaddou to assess players who are becoming increasingly important to his plans. Thapelo Mokobodi played a key role in the victory over Gallants, scoring assists before being named Man of the Match. Ouaddou, who previously worked with the midfielder at Gallants, closely observed his development and believes he can contribute in various aspects of the game.

The coach added: 'Since this guy appeared, he has been fantastic for us. I have known him since Marumo, but now he is very good for us. He can make his teammates play, he can score and create goals, and I hope he can continue in the same vein until the end of the season.'

Before returning to active play, the team will have three weeks to recover. They face a major MTN8 final against Sundowns on October 10th. For Ouaddou, this match will be the first opportunity to see if his players can carry over the standards set in the first cycle to the next.
