The rainy season in India formally ended on Wednesday. During this period, from June to September, there was a rainfall deficit during the summer (southwest) monsoon, which amounted to almost 13%. This level of shortage is considered a drought.
This figure is the fourth lowest level of seasonal rainfall since 2001 and the thirteenth lowest since 1901. Overall, the Indian Peninsula receives 30% of its annual rainfall during the northeast (winter) monsoon. Notably, Tamil Nadu (TN), Puducherry, and Karaikal receive 48% of their annual rainfall specifically during the northeast monsoon season.
