The new gadget from Samsung, Galaxy SmartTag 3, can be useful for those who often forget their keys, bags, wallets, or other belongings. The company has introduced this new compact tracker, which can be attached to bags, keys, suitcases, or pet collars.
The main difference between the SmartTag 3 and previous models is the addition of cross-platform support for iOS devices. Previously, tracking functionality was limited to the Galaxy ecosystem, but now users with both Galaxy and iPhone phones can more easily share the tracker's location information.
The design of the Galaxy SmartTag 3 has become smaller and lighter compared to its predecessors. According to Samsung data, the device volume has been reduced by approximately 35%, and the weight has been reduced by 33%. This simplifies the process of attaching the tracker to small items such as keys or collars.
However, reports indicate that the new model lacks the built-in key loop found in older versions, which may require the use of special cases or accessories from Samsung.
The battery is a critical element for such small devices. Samsung claims that the Galaxy SmartTag 3 can operate for up to 550 days under normal use. When the power-saving mode is activated, this period increases to 790 days. The device uses a replaceable CR2032 battery, which eliminates concerns about constant charging, especially if the user might lose the tracker.
Samsung has significantly improved the location finding capabilities of the SmartTag 3. Thanks to Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding technology, the Compass View function now provides direction and distance information up to 60 meters, which is about three times greater than the previous model. When the user approaches an item, UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology helps determine its direction and distance with greater accuracy. This is particularly useful, for example, if keys fall in a parking lot or a bag is left at home, as the tracker will help locate the item even if it is not visible.
The strength of the SmartTag 3 is not limited to the Bluetooth range. Samsung utilizes its Galaxy Find Network. According to the company, over 900 million Galaxy devices worldwide can function as nodes in this network. This means that if the tracker goes out of direct range of your phone, surrounding connected Galaxy devices can detect it and update its location information. For instance, if a suitcase is lost at an airport, the Galaxy Find Network can help determine its new location regardless of a direct connection to your phone, although this depends on network availability and compatible devices.
Samsung has transformed the SmartTag 3 from just a loss-finding device into an active assistant. It is equipped with the Place Notification feature, allowing the user to set a specific zone; if the tracker leaves this zone, the user receives a notification. This can be used, for example, to receive an alert if a bicycle moves from a designated spot, or for tracking pets.
Additionally, features such as Movement Detection Alert and Location History are available, which facilitate monitoring the tracker's activity.
Samsung emphasizes that the SmartTag 3 first provides support between Galaxy and iOS devices. This simplifies the exchange of location data among friends or family members who do not exclusively use Samsung smartphones. However, it is important to understand that the SmartTag 3 does not integrate into Apple's Find My network; it continues to rely on its own Galaxy Find Network for location determination.
In the US, the price of one Galaxy SmartTag 3 is $29.99, and a pack of four is $99.99. Sales in South Korea will begin on October 7th, and arrival in the US is expected in early November. Official information regarding the price and release date in India has not yet been announced by Samsung.
