Norwegian scientists publish work on the prospects of biodegradation of non-hydrolyzable plastics

In September, an article written by Norwegian researchers was published in the scientific journal Nature. This work is not a scientific study or review, but rather a reflection on the future direction of polymer chemistry, specifically concerning the biodegradation of plastics that are not susceptible to hydrolysis.

Such experimental investigations are of great importance because, in the long term, they can contribute to solving the problem of plastic pollution. Nevertheless, the current situation raises concerns: the obtained results are often difficult to replicate, and scientists from various research groups regularly engage in discussions with each other.

The publication addresses several key issues. The authors examine the reasons why some types of plastics easily decompose under the influence of enzymes, while others remain resistant. Methods for tracking extremely slow degradation processes are also discussed, and the importance of publishing negative results is emphasized.
