The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered has reignited interest in the RPG developed by CD Projekt Red on the Steam platform. Just a few hours after its availability, the game reached a peak of 120,324 concurrent players, according to data provided by SteamDB.
This new milestone establishes a historical record for The Witcher 3 on Steam, occurring more than eleven years after its initial release in 2015. Previously, the highest number of concurrent users was recorded in January 2020, when the game had around 103 thousand active players at the same time.
During that previous period, the increase in players coincided with the start of the first season of The Witcher adaptation on Netflix. This 2020 peak had already surpassed the number of players at the original game launch, which exceeded 92 thousand users in 2015. Neither subsequent seasons of the series nor the next-generation update, released in 2022, were able to surpass this record.
The immediate success of the Remastered is partly due to the distribution model adopted by CD Projekt Red. The Witcher 3 Remastered is being offered free as an update to those who already own the title on compatible platforms, allowing old players to experience the improvements without needing a new purchase.
CD Projekt Red has not yet provided details on the proportion of registered players who are returning veterans or new players discovering Geralt's journey for the first time. There is expectation that the number of players may continue to grow in the coming days, especially after the end of the first launch weekend.
