Bafana Bafana loses two players, Modiba and Mokoena, ahead of match against Eritrea

The Bafana Bafana team has faced a double blow due to injuries, as Aubrey Modiba and Tebogo Mokoena will be unable to participate in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Eritrea, which is scheduled to take place in Cairo on Wednesday. Head coach Pitso Mosimane confirmed that both players have been excluded from the squad due to injuries.

The pair from Mamelodi Sundowns has not trained since arriving in Cairo following their 2-1 victory over Guinea on Saturday at the Orlando Stadium Amstel Arena. Modiba was forced off the field in the second half after sustaining an injury, while Mokoena continued to play despite discomfort in the final minutes of the match, when Bafana secured the win.

Mosimane reported that Mokoena wanted to stay on the field despite the issue because the coach had already exhausted all substitutions. Final preparations are taking place in Egypt, where Bafana Bafana is training at the training ground ahead of the CAF AFCON qualifying match against Eritrea.

Mosimane noted: 'Mokoena was pushing through that leg when there were only a few minutes left, and he gave us everything to finish the game.' Subsequently, scans confirmed that both players sustained injuries, which excludes them from the second qualifying round of Group D.

The coach stated: 'Aubrey is unavailable; Tebogo is unavailable. They have not trained since our arrival. The doctor sent them for scans, and the scans, in short, showed that they are injured, and we cannot use them.'

Their absence leaves Mosimane without two experienced international players as Bafana strives to maintain a successful start to the campaign. Samukele Kabini, who scored the winning goal against Guinea, may move to the left-back position instead of Modiba. For Mokoena's midfield replacement, options include Batousi Aubaas and Shphelo Sithole, while Relebokhile Mofokeng could potentially operate closer to the attack.

Mosimane acknowledged that losing these two players is a blow, but emphasized that there was little choice due to their injuries. He added: 'Who would use players who helped us reach the level we are at right now? Unfortunately, they will not be available.'

Both players remained in the squad receiving treatment, although their participation in the friendly match on Sunday against Egypt also raises serious doubts. Mosimane added: 'It is good that they are here; they are resting, and we can get them into shape.' He continued: 'I don't know if they will be able to play in the next match, but according to the doctors, the chances are very slim that they can feature against Egypt. But they will definitely miss this match.'

Bafana will face Eritrea at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Wednesday, with the match scheduled to kick off at 18:00 South African time.

South Africa national team coach Mosimane decides on Lebohang Maboe's fate after injury

Despite the midfielder from Kaizer Chiefs, Lebohang Maboe, arriving at the national team with a bruise after missing a penalty in the Betway Premier League match that ended 0-0 on Sunday, he will remain part of the 'Bafana Bafana' squad.

The head coach of the 'Bafana Bafana' national team, Pitsos Mosimane, confirmed that Lebohang Maboe will stay with the team, even though he sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's match against Golden Arrows.

Maboe reported for duty with the national team on Monday but was sent for examination following complaints of sharp pain in his ankle. Speaking before the 'Bafana' first training session at the AW Muller University stadium in Johannesburg, Mosimane stated that the medical team recommended caution regarding the midfielder.

Mosimane said: 'He has a minor ankle injury; it looks like no one even touched him. It is sensitive; the doctor informed me that we must be careful with him and give him a chance.'

This injury came at an unfortunate time for Maboe, who was recovering with 'Bafana' after an impressive performance for 'Chiefs'. Instead of immediately sending him back to the club, Mosimane decided to keep the midfielder in the camp while medical staff assess the extent of the problem.

The 'Bafana' coach also expressed hope that Maboe can recover in time to participate in the three matches of the international window scheduled for South Africa. 'Bafana' will play Guinea at Orlando Stadium on September 26 as part of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and then travel to Egypt to face Eritrea on September 30. Following this, they will play a friendly match against Egypt on October 4.

Mosimane acknowledged the disappointment Maboe might feel, especially after hard work to earn his spot in the squad. He noted: 'We have a three-week camp. He took tests, and the results will show how far along he is, and I think he worked hard to get into 'Bafana'. He must be disappointed by the injury, and no one hit him. Sometimes that happens in football; let's hope Lebo recovers and tries.'

For now, Maboe remains with the national team while 'Bafana' medical staff assesses his condition. The examination will determine the scope of the injury and the possibility of the 'Chiefs' midfielder participating in any of the three matches in Mosimane's first international window since returning as 'Bafana' coach.

Pitso Mosimane announced the first squad of Bafana Bafana for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Pitso Mosimane presented his first squad for the Bafana Bafana team after returning to the head coach position. He formed a group of 30 players for the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifying matches against Guinea and Eritrea.

The Bafana team will begin its latest campaign for points against Guinea at Orlando Stadium on September 26, followed by a match against Eritrea. During the international break, Mosimane's squad will also participate in a friendly match against Egypt.

The squad is a combination of experienced international players, rising talents, and footballers playing for foreign clubs, as Mosimane begins his second tenure leading the national team.

Captain Ronwen Williams leads the goalkeeping quartet, alongside Sipho Chaine from Orlando Pirates and Ricardo Goss from Mamelodi Sundowns. In defense, Sundowns players dominate, including Aubrey Modiba, Fawaaz Basadien, and Thapelo Morena, while Pirates are represented by Kamogelo Sebelebele and Nkosinathi Sibisi.

International players are also noted in defense: Samukele Kabini from Molde, Olwethu Makhanya from Rangers, and Ime Okon from Hannover 96. Furthermore, the midfield includes Tebogo Mokoena, Lebogang Maboe, Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas, and Brooklyn Poggenpoel from Durban City.

The attacking line features Iqraam Rayners, Cassius Mailula, and Tashreeq Matthews from Sundowns, as well as Pirates forwards Oswin Appollis and Yanela Mbuthuma. Veteran Themba Zwane was also included in the list, as Mosimane aims to combine experience with young players in his first squad since his return.

Relebohile Mofokeng has returned to the squad, having started his European adventure with Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Other players playing abroad include Puso Dithejane from Chicago Fire, Thapelo Maseko from FC Copenhagen, Luther Singh from AEL Limassol, and Shandre Campbell from KV Kortrijk.

The upcoming matches will allow Mosimane to undergo his first competitive tests since his return, and Bafana aims to start a strong campaign in pursuit of AFCON qualification. The friendly match against Egypt will give the coach another opportunity to assess the squad and begin shaping Bafana's preferred formation.
