God of War: Laufey, the first game in the series with a female main character, has been given a confirmed release date—February 16, 2027. The game became available for pre-order this Tuesday (09/29) at a price of R$ 399. Additionally, a physical version of the game will be released, which is causing significant debate within the PlayStation community.
In addition to the exclusive pre-order for PlayStation 5 (PS5), Santa Monica Studio has revealed some gameplay details, including the Arco de Serpente weapon, Precision Mode, and Serpent Plates. The game was announced during the State of Play event in June, where the Jotun Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, was presented as the main heroine.
According to the plot, the character awakens in the afterlife of the Norse gods (Todo-Tempo) and must fight to preserve the path of Kratos and Atreus within the Earth's axes. Consequently, Laufey's storyline should take place parallel to the events of God of War and God of War: Ragnarok, which are the first games of the Norse era in this saga.
Following the demonstration of a 23-minute trailer at State of Play in June, Sony's studio detailed some combat mechanics for the new heroine. Faye will use the Arco da Serpente as her primary weapon, which can change its shape for different types of combat. Besides arrows, this weapon can 'bite' opponents in close combat and cause explosions at a distance. The player can change the shot type as needed, and also customize the bow using Serpent Plates, which affects both appearance and gameplay style.
Aiming modes were also introduced: Precision Mode and Free Aim Mode. The first is activated by pressing the aiming trigger, giving the attack greater power. It will also be possible to hit body parts of opponents to achieve different results, such as loss of movement or stunning. Free Aim Mode depends on partially pressing the DualSense trigger, allowing for quick shots to suspend enemies in mid-air and set up combo attacks.
Faye also possesses a melee sword, allowing for combining skills for more strategic fighting. The heroine's weapons and armor can be customized throughout the gameplay, which also includes Catalysts—artifacts used to supplement the chosen combat type. Those who purchase the game during the pre-order will receive exclusive items and cosmetics. In the Standard Edition, players will receive certain bonuses, while the Premium Digital Edition offers additional items.
The presence of a physical version draws attention because PlayStation announced that it will stop releasing such games in 2028, which caused a stir in the gaming industry. Rockstar previously warned that the highly anticipated GTA 6 will be exclusively digital, despite its planned 2026 release.
