Colleagues of Aaron Strake from the University of Wisconsin–Madison conducted a retrospective cohort study. They found that patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy who frequently use cannabis show a significant increase in seizure frequency.
The study analyzed data from 64 adult patients admitted to an epilepsy monitoring unit at a major American tertiary care facility. These patients suffered from a refractory form of epilepsy.
Information regarding cannabis use was recorded in electronic medical records one year prior to the patients' hospitalization. The severity of their condition was assessed during their hospital stay. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Epilepsia.
