The Milk + Cookies Festival has announced its return to South Africa in 2027, scheduling events in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The festival promises to bring together music, culinary arts, fashion, art, and design.
Specific dates are set: the festival will take place in Cape Town on January 29, 2027, and in Johannesburg on January 31, 2027. This announcement follows two previous South African editions that collectively attracted over 50,000 attendees.
The festival's first appearance in South Africa was in 2025, when Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada headlined before an audience of 20,000. The following year, Atlanta rapper Gunna headlined, drawing over 30,000 spectators to events in Cape Town and Johannesburg. That same year also featured a two-week Milk + Cookies Music Week program and the participation of over 50 local and international artists.
According to organizers, the 2026 event provided employment for more than 3,500 people, including catering staff, venue workers, and production crews.
Never the Same Sound
Despite featuring a very diverse lineup of headliners, organizers explain this as part of the concept. The festival is not tied to a single genre; instead, artists are selected based on the desired atmosphere and target audience. This approach is reflected in the campaign slogan: 'Never the same sound, always the same feeling.'
This phrase recently appeared on mysterious posters in various areas of Cape Town and Johannesburg, such as Braamfontein, Melville, Maboneng, Woodstock, and downtown Cape Town, without revealing the festival's name or dates. Chase Freeman, Marketing Manager for Milk + Cookies, noted: 'This was the only brief we had. We perform for the people in the room, not for the genre, and they come for how the room feels, just as much as for the name on the poster.'
More Than Music
The festival will once again extend beyond the main stages, offering a broad program that includes music, food, fashion, art, and design. Alongside the festival, there will be panel discussions, workshops, pop-up shops, and parties featuring South African creators, partners, and venues.
Co-founder of Milk + Cookies, Kevin Rees, stated that his engagement with South Africa influenced the festival's international operating model. He emphasized: 'We came here to put on a show, and what we discovered here changed how we do it everywhere.'
South African artists will be announced first, followed by the international headliner. The full Music Week program is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks. The dates are reiterated: Cape Town on January 29, 2027, and Johannesburg on January 31, 2027.
