Proteas coach Shukri Conrad states he will not demand special pitch preparation for the match against Australia

The Proteas team is considering using a doosra attack, but coach Shukri Conrad emphasized that he will not insist on creating a specific spinning surface at the Kingsmead stadium.

Australian Tour to South Africa

Proteas spinner Simon Harmer showed a very successful performance during the tour of India and may be included in the preliminary squad for the opening Test match against Australia, which will take place at Kingsmead. Although Kingsmead has long lost its reputation as a pitch conducive to ball spin, Proteas coach Shukri Conrad does not intend to put additional pressure on stadium staff to create a specific trajectory of spin for the first match against Australia, scheduled for October 9th.

The Proteas fast bowling attack is seriously weakened: four leading players—Kgosi Rabada, Lungie Ngidi, Ottniel Bartman, and Kwena Maphaka—are suffering from hamstring injuries. Rabada is included in the preliminary list of 18 players, but his participation in the match looks doubtful. Due to the possible absence of a primary fast bowler, Conrad has formed a squad including spinners Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, and Senurana Mutusami.

This trio of spinners demonstrated huge success in the year-end tours in Pakistan and India last year, allowing Proteas to break a 20-year dry spell in the subcontinent. Their potential inclusion in the starting Test XI may also be due to the fact that Australian batsmen are struggling against Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin in the current ODI series.

Nevertheless, Conrad insisted that regardless of the final eleven composition, he would not interfere with the pitch preparation for the first Test. He noted: 'I think it's natural, someone might say: 'Well, maybe they will make it spinny because they have two strong spinners—Harmer and Maharaj.' But if your next question is whether I will ask the ground keeper or curator to create a special wicket for spinners, then I can say no. I never tell or instruct stadium staff to make wickets in a certain way.'

The selection panel for the South African men's team announced a preliminary squad of 18 players for the first Dafabet Test match against Australia, which will take place from October 9th to 13th at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead stadium in Durban. Despite the crisis in the fast bowling department and the conditions, Conrad admitted that including possibly two specialized spinners has always been under consideration against the Australians.

He added: 'We have always planned to use the threat of doosra bowling, even if we are not at the peak of this hamstring pandemic. So it was always a plan. And based on that plan, we should have felt there were some weaknesses, you know. And that was identified. So yes, glad we guessed correctly again.' However, he clarified that everything depends on the conditions and the players' physical fitness. 'And based on what conditions arise—obviously, what the weather will be before the Test match—if two of them are two of the best out of four or five bowlers who, in our opinion, can win us the Test match, I will not rule it out.'

Furthermore, the Proteas mentor did not want to dwell too much on Australia's weaknesses against spin in the current ODI series, as the Australian squad for the Test will be significantly strengthened by players such as Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. He concluded: 'If we feel this is the path we can take, then it is certainly the path we will take, but it is not based on what happened in the last two ODIs, because I believe the Australian batting lineup in the Test match is very different from what we saw in the last two ODIs.'

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad called in Anrich Nortje to preliminary squad for matches against Australia

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad included Anrich Nortje in the preliminary list of 18 players announced on Monday for the Test series against Australia. Conrad was looking for genuine pace and decided to add Nortje to this squad before the first match in Kingsmead.

Kagiso Rabada also made it into the extended squad, but it remains unclear whether this key Proteas attacking player will be able to participate following a hamstring injury sustained last month. Additionally, fast bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Dane Paterson were included in the squad.

The return of Nortje is of particular interest. The 32-year-old athlete has not played Tests since Conrad's first tournament as a red-ball coach against the West Indies in February 2023. Since then, he has also not featured in first-class matches, focusing exclusively on T20 formats.

Squad Announcement - First Test

The South African men's selection committee announced the preliminary squad of 18 players for the first Dafabet Test against Australia, scheduled from October 9 to 13. The match will take place at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead stadium in Durban.

Conrad explained the reason for forming the preliminary squad by stating that there is a long preparation period before the first Test, during which the group will gather in Durban on October 1. Training days, a two-day intra-squad match, and scenario-based training are planned as part of the preparation, allowing the group and conditions to be assessed before finalizing the 15 players.

He noted that having a larger group of bowlers gives the team flexibility to cover all needs. Next week will help determine the most suitable combinations for these conditions. The team also wants to give Kagiso Rabada the opportunity to be available for selection in the first Test, and the two-day match will provide a clearer picture of his readiness to play.

Due to uncertainty regarding Kagiso Rabada's health, as well as hamstring injuries to Otteniel Bartman, Kwena Maphaka, and Lungisi Ngidi, South Africa's fast bowling reserves were depleted during the recent ODI series.

Undisclosed Dolphins batter Marcus Ackermann also received his first Test call-up after an impressive run of performances for South Africa A. The 30-year-old player scored over 1000 runs in the last 10 first-class matches for the team with an average of 82.92, including four centuries and a career-best score of 256 against Bangladesh A in August.

Conrad added that they retained the core group in the batting plan. He highly praised Marcus's contribution, noting that his leadership of the 'A' team and his batting performances earned him this opportunity. The team looks forward to his participation under Test conditions.

The preliminary Proteas men's squad for the first Test against Australia, taking place from October 9 to 13 in Kingsmead, includes: Temba Bavuma (captain), Marcus Ackermann, David Bellingham, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Vianna Mulder, Senurana Mutusami, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Kyle Verreyn.

Temba Bavuma hints at using spin in Proteas lineup due to fast bowlers' injuries ahead of Australia series

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma admitted that the squad will be forced to adjust its tactics in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. This is due to a significant number of injuries among the home team's fast bowlers.

The main blow landed on Proteas' attacking resources: spearhead Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the series even before team announcements, joined by Otneil Bartman, Lungie Ngidi, and Kwena Maphaka. All four sustained hamstring strains, in addition to Nandre Burger's long-term stress fracture.

This crisis in fast bowling has depleted the Proteas department's resources, and Marco Jansen, alongside Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, Duane Jansen, Lizzad Williams, and 20-year-old Nkobani Mokoena, must now lead the attack. Jansen is the most experienced player with 32 ODI matches, while the other players collectively have only 42 matches.

Bavuma stated just before the series began in Kingsmead that the team is built around fast bowlers. He emphasized that it is important for opponents to know they will face Proteas' fast bowlers, as this is part of the team's DNA. However, due to current issues, he noted the necessity of adaptation.

"We definitely have to adapt. Losing players like KG and Lungie is not something you can simply replace at the top of the list. We are studying the depth of our fast bowling resources and bringing these guys in to play their role," said Bavuma. He added that a player like Lizzad will certainly play a role, but the overall task is adaptation.

Although Proteas rarely used two primary spinners in ODIs at home, the fast bowling crisis might prompt a review of this strategy, especially given the presence of Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin in the 16-man squad. Both left-arm spinners are experienced, and few know the conditions at Kingsmead better than the local Maharaj, who also recently captained Proteas during the Namibia tour.

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad may be forced to use both spinners in the first ODI, but Bavuma clarified that the team retains open options when selecting the starting XI. "I think we will have to maximize the resources we have in bowling. As for the spin department, there are options," Bavuma reported. He concluded that the squad would be finalized after assessing the conditions, and despite the incomplete roster, "we will manage in true South African style."
