US President Donald Trump announced on Monday plans to build a multi-billion dollar steel plant in Iowa by a Minnesota company. This major production project is intended to be a prime example of the administration's investments ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Trump presented this project at the White House, attended by executives from Mesabi Metallics, which recently opened Minnesota's first ore mine in five decades. The White House stated that the total investment in the plant will amount to $15 billion.
This announcement comes amid Trump's efforts to strengthen his economic image before the November elections. His approval rating has recently reached historically low levels, while the Republican Party faces voter concerns regarding inflation and the cost of living. Trump makes tariffs and the revival of American manufacturing central elements of his economic agenda, asserting that raising barriers to imports stimulates the inflow of investment and jobs back into the United States.
However, Republicans are currently involved in several tense races in Iowa, a state that has become more consistently supportive of the Trump party in recent years. According to polls in this cycle, the fight for seats in the US Senate, as well as in the gubernatorial race, is very close; meanwhile, Democratic candidate Rob Sand leads in most polls.
The potential $15 billion steel project gives Trump an opportunity to actively promote this major investment to voters. It also appears at a time when the administration is under pressure to demonstrate that its policy of imposing broad tariffs on US imports can ensure industrial growth without triggering inflation.
"This is a colossal investment," Trump stated in the White House Oval Office. "Our steel industry is coming back to life."
