Minister of Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Monday the construction of a 630-kilometer corridor that will connect Siliguri in West Bengal with Guwahati (Assam) and Shillong (Meghalaya). The total cost of this project will be 61,500 crore rupees.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Transport has taken on the project of building a high-speed highway connecting Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) with Siliguri.
Upon completion of these two corridors, high-speed connectivity will be ensured between the state of Uttar Pradesh and the North Eastern region.
Speaking at the event, Gadkari emphasized that the 630-kilometer corridor will become the 'lifeline' of the North East. It will include both the construction of new sections (greenfield) and the modernization of existing road links to ensure seamless travel from start to finish.
He specified that the first section of the corridor, spanning 400 kilometers from Siliguri to Guwahati, will be built with an investment of 30,000 crore rupees, and the project trajectory is currently under approval.
