Residents of Phoenix and surrounding areas will have access to free medical care and health screenings during the fourth annual Health and Medicine Clinic, which will take place on Sunday, October 4th.
The event will run from 09:00 to 13:00 at the Phoenix Community Center, located at 20 Featherstone Place, Whetstone. This initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Umlangi Business Network and the Phoenix Community Center.
A previous event in July saw a large turnout, with hundreds of residents queuing for free diagnostic and preventive health services.
Professor Champak Jinabhai, chairperson of the Phoenix Community Center board, noted that people are often too busy caring for families and fulfilling daily duties, causing them to neglect their own health. He emphasized that this clinic provides community members with an opportunity to take a break, undergo examinations, and receive professional advice without worrying about financial costs.
The clinic will offer a wide range of medical consultations, as well as specialized services such as blood pressure and blood sugar level checks, vision assessments, dental care, and HIV testing. Related specialists will provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, audiology, and hearing screening.
The main focus will be on preventive medicine. Specialists will conduct cancer screenings, including Pap smears and prostate exams, and also provide mental health support, dietitian services, autism information, and official referrals for further clinical intervention.
Organizers strongly urged community members to prioritize early detection of problems rather than postponing consultations until symptoms worsen due to financial or time constraints. Jinabhai added that they are pleased to offer these services to the community again following the excellent response to the July clinic, and strongly recommends that people do not wait for a serious illness before seeking help.
This public initiative is supported by healthcare workers and partners, including Autism Action, UKZN School of Health Sciences, Phoenix Child Welfare, Whetstone Pharmacy, PNC Cancer Group, and the Etekwini Municipality.
