A shocking report emerged from the Samaras government girls' hostel near Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, stating that insects and lizards were found in the food served to the students and in the water.
After photos of this incident went viral, over a hundred female students, along with ABVP activists, staged a revolt and demonstration.
The students demanded that the responsible catering agency be blacklisted. The Samaras hostel is a state institution housing about 750 female students, and one food company is responsible for providing meals. Previously, when students complained about insects or dirt in the food, the warden would simply issue a notice to the agency and close the matter.
However, this time, when an insect was found in the food, the students launched a strong protest. They photographed the food containing the insect and circulated the image. The female students sought action through demonstrations.
ABVP insists that the agency supplying food to the students must be removed from the list of contractors. Meanwhile, the Food Department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) conducted an inspection at the Samaras hostel. Based on the inspection results, food samples were taken, and a fine of 25,000 rupees was imposed.
According to the female students from the Samaras government hostel, they had previously encountered insects in their food three times. They claim they lodged complaints three times but were not listened to. The students explained that previously their complaints were only resolved by issuing a notice, which is why they decided to take action this time by providing photographs to demand measures.
The students are demanding action against both the warden and the agency. The social welfare officer of the Samaras hostel stated that in such cases, he issues notices to the agency. He emphasized that the safety of the students is his top priority and promised to take action against the responsible agency.
