Google has assured that Chromebooks will maintain ChromeOS support until mid-2034. This determination aims to reduce the uncertainty generated by the announcement of the new device category, Googlebooks.
Devices eligible for support after 2034 will transition to Googlebook OS. Although Google clarified in May that the introduction of Googlebooks would not immediately end Chromebooks, it set a specific deadline for the support of existing equipment.
There is a clear distinction between the two types of laptops. The Googlebook category is more expensive and was designed with a focus on local Artificial Intelligence (AI) tasks. In contrast, the Chromebook category, launched in 2011, focuses on web-based applications, using generally simpler and more affordable hardware.
Despite these differences, the arrival of Googlebooks raised concerns about the future of Chromebooks, mainly due to the Googlebook operating system, which combines elements of Android with ChromeOS. Some analysts interpret this fusion as a sign that the Chromebook may be replaced by a more modern or economically advantageous alternative.
In the medium term, it is plausible that Googlebooks will take the place of Chromebooks in specific niches, such as corporate or educational environments, especially where local AI task execution becomes mandatory.
However, Google reaffirms that Chromebooks will remain part of the company's ecosystem for a considerable period, as detailed in its Automatic Update policy. ChromeOS support will be maintained for current models, ensuring that Chromebooks purchased today receive updates throughout their useful life, remaining available for school and corporate implementations.
Additionally, Google's help page specifies that ChromeOS will continue to receive security patches and general updates until mid-2034, a generous timeframe that reassures current Chromebook purchases.
A point of contention lies in Google's standard support cycle, which is usually ten years. This implies that those who purchase a Chromebook in 2026 or in the coming years will have a shortened support period. To mitigate this, Google has committed to providing the necessary support for migration to Googlebook OS on compatible Chromebooks whose lifecycle extends beyond 2034.
In summary, although the Googlebook category may eventually lead to the decline of Chromebooks, this replacement is far from materializing.
