Geoarchaeologists were able to conduct an extremely precise radiometric dating of the Vesuvius eruption, which led to the death of Pompeii and surrounding territories.
Using the argon-argon method, researchers dated sanidine found in pumice. According to the data obtained, the eruption took place 1938 ± 13 years ago, which fully corresponds to the known historical age of the event.
Specialists noted that the measurement error was only 0.7 percent. The results of this scientific work were presented in the publication Science Advances.
