Analysts suggest that if current price growth rates persist, the Big Mac burger in South Africa could cost residents around 130 rand by 2030, more than double its current price.
The Big Mac Index, which has existed for 40 years, serves as a practical tool for assessing the relative value of currencies. Traditionally, South Africa's ranking in this index indicates that the rand should be stronger than it actually is. Economists attribute this devaluation to volatility related to commodities, political risks, and structural deficits in the South African economy.
According to the latest edition of the Big Mac Index from The Economist, published in July 2026, a Big Mac costs 56.90 rand in South Africa. This price has significantly increased compared to 31 rand in 2020 and 18.45 rand in 2010, meaning the burger has become approximately three times more expensive over the last 16 years.
Calculations by The National show that the Big Mac price has increased by 45.5% since 2020, while cumulative inflation over the same period was 36.16%. Nevertheless, South Africans still pay less than most countries in the world; at 56.90 rand, the local Big Mac costs about $3.49, making South Africa the tenth cheapest among 54 locations in July of the index.

The price reached 51.90 rand in 2024, 53.90 rand in 2025, and 56.90 rand this year. Between 2020 and 2024, the price rose from 31 rand to 51.90 rand, corresponding to an average annual increase of approximately 16.9%. If the Big Mac continued to grow at the same rate starting from the 2024 price, it could cost around 130 rand by 2030.
In the US, a similar burger costs $6.22, and in the UK, £5.49, equivalent to approximately $7.40. In South Africa, the burger has transformed from a simple meal for 31 rand to a product approaching 60 rand in just six years.
