A technology specialist is facing a difficult choice between two career opportunities. On one hand, there is a job available with an annual income of 57 lakhs, which allows for remote work, providing more time for family and personal life. On the other hand, there is an opportunity to receive a package worth about 84 lakhs, but this requires weekly trips to Bangalore.
Currently, this specialist works as a Senior Software Engineer at an American startup in Series F growth stage. His current salary is 57 lakhs as a base salary without any bonuses. He works fully remotely from Madurai and receives a net monthly salary of about 3.24 lakhs.
Recently, he received an offer from a large American company for the position of Senior Software Engineer. This offer includes a base salary of 62 lakhs, a target bonus of 6.2 lakhs, and stock (RSUs) worth about $50,000, equivalent to approximately 48 lakhs over three years. With this offer, his monthly income would be around 3.76 lakhs.
The new position has a specific condition: the specialist must spend two days a week in the office located in Bellandur, Bangalore. This is where the situation took interesting turns. The specialist prefers to keep his family base in Madurai rather than moving to Bangalore. His plan is to travel to Bangalore every night on a night train on Monday, work on Tuesday and Wednesday in the office, and then return to Madurai on a night train on Wednesday evening.
According to his calculations, this will be about 40 round trips per year, meaning he will spend about 20 hours on the train every week.
Posting his dilemma on Reddit, the specialist asked whether such a travel schedule would affect his health and ability to work over one or two years. His main concern relates to sleep, as he fears disruption of his sleep pattern due to constant overnight train travel.
Reddit users' opinions on the situation were mixed. Some users found the weekly commutes extremely tiring. One of them, citing personal experience, noted that long trips to visit the office twice a week leave insufficient energy for anything other than work. Another user advised that regular overnight train travel is unfavorable for health and mental well-being.
Another group of users raised the issue of additional expenses that would arise from living and eating in Bangalore for two days a week, in addition to ticket costs. In their opinion, the salary difference might be insignificant after accounting for these extra costs. Nevertheless, some Reddit users presented a different viewpoint. They argued that the salary difference is substantial enough, and if the trips can be managed for a period of time, the Bangalore offer is worth considering.
