Valentine Nfonsem and his scientific staff from Howard University completed a retrospective cohort study. They found that undergoing an appendectomy after acute appendicitis reduces the probability of developing colorectal cancer by more than half compared to patients who were prescribed only conservative antibiotic treatment.
A sample of 15,774 patients who received either surgical or conservative treatment for acute appendicitis was selected for analysis using the pseudo-randomization method; data were obtained from the TriNetX network. After excluding individuals already suffering from colorectal cancer from the cohorts, 15,616 and 15,295 people remained in each group, respectively.
Specialists assessed the risk and studied survival rates in these groups using the Kaplan-Meier method. The results are planned to be presented at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress in 2026.
