Egypt is implementing digital technologies to enrich the experience of tourists exploring its ancient heritage. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization uses three-dimensional screens that bring the history and artifacts of Egypt to life through sound and images.
The Grand Egyptian Museum has expanded this experience by offering visitors AI-based audio guides. These guides can recognize artifacts and provide information in the guest's preferred language. Furthermore, the museum features displays using augmented and virtual reality, as well as a virtual reality room that allows tourists to immerse themselves in Egypt's millennia-old history.
Nevertheless, officials emphasize that technology will not replace human guides. Archaeologist Magdi Shaker notes that AI and virtual reality can provide personalized information, but tour guides remain indispensable for storytelling, answering questions, and engaging visitors.
Egypt is also developing the field of virtual tourism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities launched virtual tours of museums and ancient sites, allowing people to remotely familiarize themselves with Egypt's heritage.
