The Hiring Process at Amazon: From Application to Interview

Starting a career can be challenging when trying to understand the hiring process of any company, especially since different organizations use their own methods for candidate selection. At Amazon, the hiring process is not standardized across all positions; according to the company's official website, the stages from application submission to assessment and interview can vary depending on the nature of the work and the role held.

The first step for candidates aspiring to work at Amazon is submitting an online application. Young specialists can apply for positions of interest through the company's official website, but before applying, they must carefully review the requirements regarding education, experience, and other necessary conditions for that specific role.

For some vacancies at Amazon, candidates may undergo an online assessment after submitting their application. The format and topic of this assessment depend on the specific job, so one cannot assume that the same test or evaluation will be used for every vacancy at Amazon.

Phone screenings are also possible for certain roles. During this stage, questions may be asked about the candidate's qualifications, skills, and aspects related to the job. This stage is not mandatory for all vacancies, as the entire hiring process is determined by the needs of the specific position.

Regarding interviews, this is often the most difficult period for young professionals. In many professional and technical roles at Amazon, the interview may consist of multiple levels, where different interviewers discuss various topics with the candidate at different levels. The company aims to understand the candidate's skills and potential for the role during these meetings.

Behavioral questions are also addressed during interviews, which help assess alignment with the corporate culture of the office. Candidates may be asked about previous experience, problem-solving methods, and decisions made in various situations. Nevertheless, according to the company's official information, not all positions require an interview; for example, hourly work often does not include this stage, although it may be necessary for some positions.

Sometimes, when starting a career, it is difficult to determine which position is best to apply for. However, speaking of vacancies at Amazon, they include more than just software or office work. In addition to positions related to warehouses, purchasing, delivery, air transport, and customer service, the company offers technical and non-technical professional roles. In the technical field, there may be positions related to software development, data analytics, security, user experience, and engineering.

Amazon reaches out to former employees to fill AI and cloud technology vacancies after mass layoffs

According to a Business Insider report, Amazon is beginning to recruit its former employees, including those who were laid off, to fill open positions in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and cloud computing.

Emails from recruiters reviewed by Business Insider indicate that Amazon's AI organizational structure, overseen by Amazon Web Services (AWS) Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian, contacted former workers last month regarding available roles in AI and machine learning. The publication reported that one recruiter termed this initiative the 'Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative.'

In another instance, an AWS finance department recruiter contacted a former employee and offered an expedited interview process that could lead to a job offer. One email received by Business Insider stated: 'A lot has changed since you worked here, and very interesting work is happening in AI/ML now.'

This approach comes as Amazon has cut over 30,000 jobs following several rounds of layoffs. Simultaneously, the company continues to hire for AI-related positions as it expands its focus on this technology.

Amazon told Business Insider that rehiring former employees is a long-standing corporate practice. A company representative, Hailey Silva, stated that former employees, including those who were laid off, may be considered for open roles depending on current hiring needs. She clarified that this initiative was not exclusively aimed at people who left the company due to Amazon's return-to-office policy.

Silva also emphasized that Amazon's requirements for workplace attendance remain unchanged. According to her, the company is always interested in connecting with talented professionals, both among new candidates and former Amazon employees, to fill open positions.
