Indian Railways has introduced the country's first train running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) after launching its first hydrogen train. The Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, participated in the inauguration ceremony of this eco-friendly train, which departed from Sabarmati in Gujarat state on Sunday.
Before putting the train into operation, it underwent successful trials. According to reports, the train received clearance to run after covering approximately 2000 kilometers. The goal of introducing this LNG train is to reduce fuel costs and decrease carbon emissions.
A post by the Ahmedabad Railway on social media indicated that the Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Amit Shah, inaugurated the first LNG-powered train of Indian Railways from Sabarmati. The post highlighted the beginning of a new era of green energy in Indian Railways, starting from Sabarmati.
This project is based on dual-fuel technology, combining diesel and LNG. This means that the same engine can run on either LNG or diesel, depending on fuel availability. This step by the railway aims to reduce dependence on traditional fuels and increase energy efficiency, ensuring significant savings for the railway system.
The Ahmedabad Railway division posted a series of updates on the social network X, showcasing the first footage of the country's first LNG train. The videos showed the start of this green journey. Furthermore, one of the videos showed students welcoming this new railway venture while waving the tricolor flag.
Following the launch of the LNG train, Indian Railways had previously started operating the first hydrogen train. This 10-coach train is currently running between Jind and Sonipat stations in Haryana state. The total length of this route is approximately 89–90 kilometers, and the railway is exploring the possibility of using other routes for hydrogen train operations.
