With the start of the cold season, heavy blazers, coats, cardigans, and expensive sweaters reappear from the wardrobe. However, long-term storage leads to the accumulation of moisture, the smell of a closed closet, and dust. Washing such items repeatedly with water and detergents can lead to fabric damage, color fading, and pilling. Furthermore, frequent dry cleaning is very expensive.
Nevertheless, there is no need to worry: you can refresh and clean your most expensive blazers and sweaters at home without using a drop of water or soap, giving them the look of a new, hygienic, and odorless item. Below are three simple and effective methods for cleaning wool garments at home without using water.
1. Baking soda and essential oil
To apply this method, lay the blazer or sweater on a flat surface. Then, evenly sprinkle the fabric with baking soda using a sieve. If you want to achieve a pleasant aroma, mix 3-4 drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil into the baking soda.
Leave the item for 20–30 minutes. Baking soda effectively absorbs sweat odors, moisture, and dust accumulated in the fabric. After half an hour, gently brush off the baking soda with a soft delicate fabric brush.
2. Steam and fabric refresher spray
To prepare a homemade spray, mix 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and 1/2 teaspoon of fabric conditioner or rose water in a spray bottle.
Hang the blazer or coat on a hanger. Spray this solution onto the fabric from a distance, avoiding getting it wet. After that, direct steam from a steamer from a distance. The combination of steam and vinegar instantly eliminates various bacteria, viruses, and unpleasant odors from the clothing.
3. Removing pills and dust with a bristled brush and roller scrubber
To remove dust, hair, and pills from sweaters and blazers, instead of water, use a sticky roller or a soft wool brush. Gently brush the fabric from top to bottom. This helps preserve the fibers of the garment, making it clean and looking like new even without washing.
After cleaning, it is recommended to hang the clothes on a hanger for one hour in weak sunlight or outdoors to completely remove any remaining moisture.
