Sunil Gavaskar warned the next chief selector about the risks of decision-making

The question of extending Ajit Agarkar's term or appointing a new chairman from the Indian cricket selection committee did not receive a final answer at the 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which took place on Friday. Members of the regional associations left the decision on this matter to the discretion of the board officials.

After the meeting, one senior BCCI official stated that the officials were authorized to make decisions regarding the selection committees. BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla also confirmed that the further decision regarding the selection committee would be made by the board management.

As Agarkar's current term is drawing to a close, his future was actively discussed before the AGM. However, after the meeting, the board did not specify whether Agarkar would receive an extension or if he would be assigned to a new person. Thus, the decision regarding Agarkar is postponed for now, and the issue is not closed; the BCCI management will determine the next steps.

Issues with the junior selection committee

The BCCI faces not only the issue of the senior selection committee. The board also needs to fill all five positions in the junior selection committee. After the officials were granted authority on matters related to the selection committees, they will also be responsible for advancing this process.

Agarkar became the chairman of the men's senior selection committee in July 2023, and his place on the five-member committee was maintained for the 2025 AGM.

Arun Dumal remains in IPL leadership

The AGM also concluded the process concerning IPL leadership. It was decided that Arun Singh Dumal would remain in the IPL leadership. During this time, the Mumbai Cricket Association requested the BCCI to allocate additional major matches to its venue.

Sourav Ganguly and Venkatesh Prasad attended

Representatives from the board's regional associations were present at the 95th BCCI AGM. Among them were former Indian team captain Sourav Ganguly and former fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad.

Now all attention is focused on what decision the BCCI officials will make regarding the Agarkar case. Instead of making a decision at the AGM itself, it has delegated responsibility for the next step to the officials.

10 important decisions at the BCCI AGM: from IPL to umpire fees

The 95th BCCI Annual General Meeting took place on September 18, 2026, at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Many important decisions related to Indian cricket were made at the meeting.

1. Two representatives from the general body—Arun Singh Dumal and M. Hayrul Jamal Majumdar—were included in the IPL leadership.

2. The general body approved the audited reports of the BCCI for the financial year 2025-26.

3. The BCCI's annual budget for the financial year 2026-27 was also approved.

4. Auditors were appointed for the financial year 2026-27.

5. A unanimous decision was made to celebrate the 20th season of the IPL on a grand scale in 2027.

6. BCCI will celebrate its centenary in 2028. The AGM decided to begin preparations for the centenary, which will start in December 2027 and last throughout 2028.

7. An increase in the remuneration system for umpires and match referees, as well as changes in their grades, was approved.

8. A new internal committee was formed under the BCCI's policy on preventing sexual harassment.

9. Changes were made and the updated BCCI age verification policy was approved.

10. The general body discussed ensuring the best conditions and necessary resources for cricketers with disabilities in cooperation with regional cricket associations to promote their development and progress.

The head coach of the Indian women's cricket team, Amol Majumdar, explained that the decision not to accept the trophy of the Women's Asia Cup 2026 winner from Mosin Naqvi, Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was made by the BCCI.

Majumdar reported that the team fully supported this council decision after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs. He emphasized that this dispute in no way diminishes the brilliance of the team's championship title.

During the press conference after the match, coach Amol Majumdar stated that the BCCI determined this position, and the team firmly adheres to it. According to him, for him, the tournament is officially over. He noted that the official document of the major council clearly states that India is the 2026 Asia Champion, and that is enough. Now the team's focus is on the upcoming Asian Games.

The coach also expressed immense pride in every member of the team. He particularly stressed that the team has no regrets about its decision. According to him, this entire group, including players and support staff, demonstrated magnificent play, and the team is very satisfied with becoming the tournament champion.

BCCI Secretary Devadjit Saikia told India Today-Aajtak that India initially opposed receiving the trophy from Naqvi, but he was offered two options. The first option was for ACC Vice President Khalid Al-Jourani to present the trophy to the Indian team. The second option involved a representative of the winning council presenting the trophy to their team, according to current tradition.

Saikia added that Naqvi rejected both proposals. He insisted that he should personally present the trophy, but the Indian team maintained its stance and refused to accept the trophy. During the match, Naqvi was seen at the table with BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla and Secretary Saikia, but ultimately, due to the deadlock, the Indian team did not receive the trophy.

After the final match concluded, when the official award ceremony began, Naqvi presented a cheque to the silver medalist, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Attapattu. After this, Attapattu spoke with presenter and former Sri Lankan cricketer Parvez Mahroof, and the award ceremony was immediately concluded. Then Naqvi left the field with other ACC officials, while the Indian team was not presented with the winner's trophy or the gold medal.

It is worth noting that this entire conflict resembles the final of the men's Asia Cup, which took place in September 2025. At that time, India won the title by defeating Pakistan and refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi due to strained relations. At that moment, India demanded that the trophy be handed over by an official of the Emirates Cricket Board, which Naqvi rejected. At that time too, ACC officials removed the trophy from the field.
