Many people who were unable to complete their education after the 10th or 12th grade for some reason begin preparing for civil service several years later. A natural question arises: is it possible to get a government job at the age of 35? The answer is yes, although this is limited to certain types of recruitment. Since age restrictions and educational requirements vary for each position and competition, it is crucial to study the official notification before applying for any vacancy at age 35.
GDS Option at 35 Years Old
According to the Department of Posts notification on the GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II from July 2026, the age requirement for a candidate for the post of Rural Postman was between 18 and 40 years old. This means that candidates aged 35 can apply. However, simply meeting the age requirements does not guarantee employment; candidates must also fulfill other qualification criteria. To apply, possession of a certificate of completion from any recognized board for the 10th grade is mandatory. Furthermore, candidates must pass mathematics and English exams at the 10th-grade level. Additionally, the candidate must study the local language of the region where they are applying up to at least the 10th grade.
Age of 35 is Insufficient
It is important to understand that being within the age limit is not a guarantee of getting the job. In the GDS selection process, a computer-generated ranking is formed based on scores obtained in the 10th grade. Consequently, the candidate's 10th-grade marks play a decisive role in the selection process. There is no procedure for creating a ranking through a separate written examination in this competition. The candidate must first check whether their 10th-grade marks and other eligibility criteria meet the conditions of the relevant notification.
What Does GDS Do?
GDS work includes not only mail distribution. Duties can vary depending on the position held. A postman may be involved in selling stamps and stationery at the post office, delivering mail, handling operations related to the India Post Payments Bank, and other postal tasks. An Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) performs duties such as selling stamps and stationery, delivering and distributing mail, conducting transactions through the India Post Payments Bank, and assisting the Branch Postmaster. As for the Branch Postmaster (BPM), they are responsible for the daily operations of the post office, and depending on the position, may perform tasks related to mail delivery and distribution.
Is it Possible to Find a Job in SSC at Age 35?
The second question is whether candidates aged 35 can apply for various vacancies in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The answer is: not all SSC vacancies are available to people over 35 years old. For example, in the SSC MTS 2025 competition for general posts, the age range was from 18 to 25 years, and for some posts, it was from 18 to 27 years. Candidates from certain categories may be granted exemption from age restrictions according to the rules. Similarly, in the SSC Selection Post 2026 competition for various posts, different age limits were set, with the maximum age for many posts being only 30 years. Therefore, one cannot conclude that a 35-year-old candidate can apply just because the maximum age in some SSC competition is 30 years. It is necessary to check if any age exemption applies according to the rules of the specific competition.
Who Receives Age Benefits?
Overall, the paths to obtaining government jobs at age 35 are not entirely closed. In some competitions, the maximum age exceeds 35 years, and exemptions from the upper age limit are provided for reserved categories and some other eligible candidates according to government rules. It can be viewed this way: in the GDS competition, the overall maximum age is 40 years. According to official rules, candidates from SC/ST categories are granted an exemption from the upper age limit by 5 years, and candidates from OBC by 3 years. No additional age exemption is provided for candidates from EWS. For Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), an exemption of 10 years is provided, and for PwBD-OBC, 13 years, and for PwBD-SC/ST, up to 15 years.
However, the rules for age exemptions are not uniform across all government competitions. For instance, in the SSC 2026 competition, candidates from SC/ST were granted an exemption of 5 years, OBC by 3 years, and Ex-Servicemen by 3 years according to established rules. In the case of Ex-Servicemen, the rule of deducting the period of military service from the actual age also applies.
