Tensions between the Proteas and Australia flared up again during the first ODI match between the two teams, held at Kingsmead on Thursday. The Proteas team, featuring the duo of Marco Jansen and Matthieu Britzck, was prepared for the confrontation with Australian players.
Proteas coach Shukri Conrad noted that despite statements claiming Australia has changed, a single spark is enough to ignite the fire between these fierce rivals. He suggested that although the current Australian squad might be less aggressive, someone will eventually intervene in the conflict.
The tension peaked after 46.4 overs into the first ODI at Kingsmead. At that moment, Proteas batsmen Matthieu Britzck and Marco Jansen came to the crease. Britzck, who had previously stated he would not back down against the Australians, expressed enthusiasm about the Australian team's visit, noting they might try to psychologically pressure the Proteas ahead of the World Cup.
The climax occurred when Australian bowler Josh Inglis attempted to take a wicket, but the ball accidentally hit Britzck in the back. Before the umpires ruled the ball dead, Britzck and Jansen quickly ran an extra run, which drew the ire of fast bowler Nathan Ellis. After Ellis voiced his opinion regarding the alleged lack of sportsmanship from both players, Britzck and Jansen confronted him, forcing umpire Lubabalo 'Babs' Gqumu to intervene.
After the match, Britzck did not regret the incident, stating he acted in the moment and that if it were the World Cup, he would repeat such an action, as he believes it is part of the game.
The rivalry between Proteas and Australia has a long history. It flared up during the last multi-format tournament in 2018 when Australian players were seen tampering with the ball using sandpaper in the third Test in Newlands. Incidents have also occurred previously, including an on-field altercation between Quinton de Kock and David Warner on the dressing room stairs at Kingsmead, and the accusation against Kagiso Rabada for touching former Australian captain Steve Smith's shoulder during the second Test at St George's Park.
The history of animosity goes even deeper: Australia's first tour of South Africa in 1994 turned chaotic when Shane Warne launched a fierce verbal attack on Proteas opener Andrew Hudson after his dismissal at the Wanderers. Furthermore, former Proteas captain Graeme Smith violated the 'what happens on the field stays on the field' principle by revealing in an interview that Warne constantly insulted him.
Further escalation of tensions is expected, especially after Jansen caught a ball with one hand on the boundary, sending Matt Renshaw off with a string of profanities. Conrad concludes that he welcomes such dramatic moments, comparing them to the fiery 2018 tournament, as it 'captivates people.'
