SA Hindu Maha Sabha Approves National SHAKTI Assistance Line Project

The South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS) approved a proposal to establish the national SHAKTI (Support Helpline for Assistance, Knowledge, Trust and Information) line during its recent Annual General Meeting. This initiative reflects the Maha Sabha's commitment to addressing the growing social, emotional, and practical challenges affecting individuals, families, and communities across South Africa.

Social Issues

Many residents of South Africa continue to face significant socio-economic pressures. Communities are grappling with substance abuse, youth crime, gender-based violence, criminality, family breakdown, and rising mental health issues. These difficulties are compounded by persistent unemployment, poverty, inequality, and financial instability.

These interconnected problems drive many families into vicious cycles of hardship from which it is difficult to escape. Many people feel isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn for help regarding financial stress, emotional trauma, or lack of access to support services.

Family structures are also changing. Extended family support networks are not always available. Consequently, many families require access to childcare services, elderly support, home care, mental health services, and caregiving assistance. Increased life expectancy has further amplified the demand for support related to chronic illnesses and other age-related conditions.

Mission and Values of SHAKTI

The mission of the SHAKTI helpline is to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive information, support, and referrals, while maintaining confidentiality within clearly defined legal and protective limitations, to members of Hindu communities and, where possible, the general public. The values guiding the SHAKTI helpline include Seva (selfless service), Compassion, Dignity, Confidentiality, and Accountability.

The service is rooted in Hinduism and is open to all, according to the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family (SAHMS motto). Access is not dependent on participation in worship, donations, race, or gender. Spiritual guidance does not replace professional care.

Role of the SHAKTI Helpline

While the helpline cannot solve issues of unemployment, poverty, or inequality, it can serve as a vital gateway to existing resources that are difficult for many people to find. The SAHMS-SHAKTI helpline will provide information, guidance, and referrals to appropriate support services, including, but not limited to:

  • Spiritual: Providing links to priests, scholars, and counselors; information on Hindu practices, festivals, and samskaras; and offering guidance on ethical and Dharmic matters.
  • Emotional and Family Needs: Resolving family issues; marital counseling; child-rearing; elderly concerns; grief support; elder care; debt counseling.
  • Youth: Addressing identity and cultural issues; bullying and discrimination; academic problems; education; substance abuse and other related issues.
  • Crisis and Wellbeing: Providing crisis intervention, assistance with domestic or intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and referral to suicide prevention, substance abuse, shelter, social welfare, bereavement support, and food distribution services.
  • Disaster and Emergency: Mobilizing communities in the event of natural disasters and responding to humanitarian needs.

The helpline will not start from scratch or try to reinvent the wheel. Many affiliated SAHMS organizations already promote Seva through food schemes, family aid programs, and access to medical and legal support from qualified professionals. The helpline will build upon these existing efforts and coordinate them, rather than duplicating them. It will help identify gaps in service, encourage collaboration between organizations, and ensure people are directed to the most suitable forms of assistance.

Phased and Sustainable Approach

The SHAKTI helpline will initially launch as an information, support, and referral agency, rather than a full-fledged crisis counseling service. This phased approach mitigates legal and operational risks and allows SAHMS to develop governance structures, volunteer capacity, referral networks, and financial backing. The service will then gradually expand to include counseling and crisis support functions once appropriate safeguards, professional oversight, and sustainable funding are secured.

Goals for the First Year

The initial phase will focus on building a solid foundation by: establishing accountable governance and protection protocols; creating secure technological systems and a verified directory of referrals; recruiting and training volunteers; and piloting the service. This will allow for demand testing while simultaneously improving the efficiency and functionality of the service.

The helpline will primarily be provided in a virtual format during the pilot phase. Through modern telephone and online systems, trained volunteers can assist people across South Africa, reducing costs and expanding reach. Processes will be in place to ensure volunteer safety when dealing with callers, including organized shift-based volunteering and supervision, secure storage systems for caller information, backup support in case of power or communication outages, and secure centralized record-keeping compliant with data protection and privacy requirements.

SAHMS also intends to create a technical working group comprising IT, telecommunications, cybersecurity, and data protection professionals to advise on technology and risk management issues.

Funding and Sustainability

The service will remain free for users, with no fees for referrals or sale of caller information. The pilot phase will help determine long-term demand, funding needs, and operational sustainability. The long-term success of the SAHMS-SHAKTI helpline will depend on securing stable and diversified funding that allows the service to operate reliably, professionally, and safely. Although the initiative will always be rooted in volunteerism and the spirit of Seva, there are certain critical operational costs, including technological infrastructure, training, protection, supervision, administration, and quality assurance, that require continuous financial support.

A healthy funding model supported by donations, sponsorships, grants, fundraising events, and partnerships will enable the service to continue functioning seamlessly and reduce risks for those seeking help. This is crucial for service sustainability and continuity, as well as for strengthening public trust and serving vulnerable groups who will benefit from this much-needed service.

National Initiatives

The SHAKTI helpline is one of the most significant national initiatives undertaken by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha. By connecting with existing voluntary service networks, leveraging professional expertise, and promoting fundamental Hindu values of compassion, responsibility, and Seva, the helpline can serve as a reliable agency supporting thousands of people, families, and communities.

The SHAKTI helpline will increase collaboration among temples, affiliated organizations, qualified specialists, and established governmental and non-profit service providers. With proper governance, sustainable funding, and phased implementation, the SAHMS-SHAKTI Helpline could become a flagship national community support service, embodying the eternal Hindu principle: Nar Seva — Narayan Seva — service to humanity is service to the Divine.
