The Kakulo Kabasa Hydroelectric Power Plant is located on the middle reaches of the Kwanza River, 230 kilometers from the country's capital, Luanda, in Angola. This facility is the largest hydroelectric power project in Angola.
The plant was built by a Chinese enterprise and has an installed capacity of 2172 MW, with a potential annual energy output exceeding 8500 GWh.
However, during construction, remains of ancient settlements, including burials, were discovered. Consequently, in 2019, the company China Energy Engineering Corporation formed an international team of archaeologists.
This team included specialists from the National Museum of Archaeology of Angola, CNRS from France, the French National Museum of Natural History, the Sorbonne, the University of Warsaw, and Harvard University to conduct preservation and research work.
