Pope gathered 80 thousand young people in France, discussing the generation's anxieties

The first day of the Pope's visit to France concluded with an evening prayer attended by 80 thousand young people. During the event, the Pope answered several questions and watched a presentation on the lives of saints in the country, which included Roman chariots and medieval soldiers on horseback, concluding with a fireworks display.

On this arena filled with enthusiastic youth, the Pope, while answering one of them named François, mentioned feelings common among young people, such as 'anxiety and uncertainty.'

The Pope stated that 'these are very common feelings caused by the instability of future plans, the temporary nature of emotional bonds, and the fragility of relationships.' He added that other factors pressuring the generation include: 'fatigue caused by screens, and concern about climate change or the economic and international situation.'

'Yes, we must pay attention to these feelings,' emphasized the North American Pope, inviting the youth to 'keep their hearts open to the suffering of their peers.' He also noted that 'the experience of fragility, any fragility, becomes a reason for a disciple of Christ to be his witness.'

He assured them that 'whoever follows Jesus on the path of humble and free service is freed from anxiety and gains new enthusiasm by experiencing inner joy and peace.'

In response to a question from Chloé, a 25-year-old girl actively involved in a Catholic youth group from poor areas of Île-de-France, the Pope said: 'the society in which we live seems indifferent to God. However, the Lord is not indifferent to us! This is what matters and gives us hope.'

He regretted that the problem was not only that some people were drifting away from God, but also that others were becoming indifferent to the suffering of their neighbors. Nevertheless, he asserted that 'in the realization of daily life and even in difficulties, faith becomes a living testimony of hope.'

Concluding the prayer, the Pope continued speaking and criticized: 'this lifestyle that pushes us to want everything but remain nobody; to receive many 'likes' but remain alone with ourselves.'

The leader of the Catholic Church called on the youth to avoid 'pride, vanity, violence, and greed'—feelings that 'can overcome people and hide terrible loneliness.' He stressed that 'when we decide not to follow this style, then we begin to move towards justice, piety, faith, love, patience, and humility.'

The youth who filled the stadium since 5:00 PM were also invited to become 'artisans of peace' and follow the path of holiness.

Nearly 300,000 people gather in Paris to watch the Pope during his visit to France

Around 300,000 people took to the streets of Paris to accompany the Pope, who took a tour between the UNESCO headquarters and Notre Dame Cathedral using the Papamobile, during the first day of his stay in France, which will last until Monday.

Concurrently, approximately 80,000 young people are preparing to receive Pope Leo XIV at the Stade de France, located on the outskirts of Paris. This event will consist of a vigil that will include music, testimonies, prayers, and the display of the Holy Tunic of Argenteuil, a relic associated with the Christian tradition of Jesus Christ.

The vigil, considered one of the highlights of Leo XIV's visit to France, is scheduled to begin around 9:00 PM (8:00 PM in Lisbon) and will feature performances by seven soloists and various French-speaking groups.

Stadium entrances, located 14 kilometers from Paris, opened at 5:00 PM local time (4:00 PM in Lisbon). The musical repertoire will include the duo Les Frangines, Franco-Malagasy singer Anisha Jo, and Tagra, a rapper with Christian inspiration.

Other confirmed artists include Les Guetteurs, a French Christian reggae group; 17-year-old Franco-American soprano Monroe; Grégory Turpin, a prominent figure in contemporary French Christian music; and Canadian singer Natasha St-Pier.

The event will officially begin with a parade of delegations, intended to illustrate the diversity of the Catholic Church present in France. Young people preparing for baptism, as well as priests, religious men and women, and pilgrims, will participate.

Testimonies from several young people will be accompanied by Christian 'pop' musicians and about 2,500 members of Ecclesia Cantic, a Catholic choir composed of young and adult members.

Leo XIV is expected to arrive at the stadium around 8:45 PM local time (7:45 PM in Lisbon). He will be greeted by the Bishop of Saint-Denis, Étienne Guillet, after touring the venue in the Papamobile before heading to the main tribune.

Next, there will be a moment where several young people can interact with the pontiff, asking questions and sharing their hopes and concerns, culminating in the central moment of prayer.

The narrative of the encounter will be guided by the history of saints linked to France, such as Saint Dionysius, recognized as the first bishop of Paris; Saint Martin of Tours; and Saint Vincent de Paul, known for his work with the needy.

A crucial point will be the exhibition of the Holy Tunic of Argenteuil during a period of contemplation. This relic, venerated as the seamless linen tunic worn by Christ on the way to Calvary, has been kept for 1,200 years in the Basilica of Saint-Denis de Argenteuil and is only shown to the public every fifty years.

Afterward, Leo XIV will give a reflection based on an excerpt from the First Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy.

The vigil will conclude around 11:00 PM local time (10:00 PM in Lisbon) with the celebration of Compline, the prayer that marks the end of the day in Catholic liturgical tradition.

Pope Leon XIV arrives in France after 18 years, visiting Paris

After eighteen years, France welcomes the visit of Pope Leon XIV. The Holy Father arrived in Paris as part of a four-day visit at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, French church authorities, and the Director-General of UNESCO. The Pope has just landed in the country.

This is the first time the Pope has visited France since Benedict XVI's visit in September 2008. Pope Leon XIV is expected to be met with grand masses, a packed program, and significant public and media enthusiasm, as the visit is seen as an opportunity for the Catholic Church striving for renewal.

The Pope's visit, which costs 27 million euros, required the mobilization of thousands of security personnel across three locations: Paris, Lourdes (southwest), and Metz (northeast).

The Pope from North America will address a wide range of topics, including the fight against sexual abuse, artificial intelligence, the migration crisis, the defense of life, and peace in Europe. This occurs just seven months before the French presidential elections, where the far-right holds a strong position.

Leon XIV arrived at Paris-Orly Airport at 10 am on Friday (one hour earlier than in Lisbon), followed by a courtesy call to Emmanuel Macron and a meeting with authorities, civil society, and the diplomatic corps at the Élysée Palace.

In the afternoon, Leon XIV visited the UNESCO headquarters and participated in evening prayers at Notre Dame Cathedral. In the evening, he joined young people at the Francis Stadium in Saint-Denis.
