Bill Gates warns that AI could cause a billion deaths and calls for technology regulation

Bill Gates expressed concern that artificial intelligence has the capacity to trigger events resulting in a billion deaths. The Microsoft co-founder made this warning during an interview with NBC's Meet the Press program.

This statement comes amid intense debate about the inherent dangers of technological progress. Gates advocates for government intervention in developing standards, protections, and oversight systems to keep pace with AI's evolution.

During the conversation, Gates emphasized the risk of sophisticated systems being employed by individuals with malicious intentions. He stated: 'AI is certainly powerful enough to trigger events that, you know, cause 1 billion deaths.' He later detailed the aspect that causes him the most apprehension.

According to him, there has never been a weapon as potent as the combination of ill-intentioned people using the most advanced AI tools. Gates, Microsoft co-founder, reinforced his position that responsibility cannot rest solely on corporations, arguing that law enforcement agencies and political figures must participate in defining safeguards and monitoring mechanisms, which should be formalized by law.

In an article published in August, the businessman had already mentioned potential harmful uses of AI, such as: The debate gained momentum with the advancement of companies like Anthropic and OpenAI in developing increasingly competent systems. However, within these same companies, criticisms have arisen regarding the risks of this technological competition.

This month, Jacob Coxon left Anthropic and voiced criticism about the accelerated pace of development toward artificial superintelligence. Furthermore, another company collaborator expressed the belief that there is over a 10% chance that the technology could eradicate all of humanity in the next decade.

Perspectives and Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Concerns have also reached the top levels of technology companies. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, advocated for moderation in AI development. This suggestion was supported by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk.

In this landscape, Gates distinguishes between the most immediate risks, associated with the use of AI by ill-intentioned groups, and long-term projections about a potential threat to the human species. For him, the challenge lies in establishing control mechanisms that minimize these dangers without paralyzing technological advancement.

The unease is not new. In an essay released in August, Gates had already warned that AI could expand opportunities but could also become a source of inequality and enable the use of advanced systems to inflict large-scale damage. In the interview, he reiterated this point from the perspective of regulation, arguing that technological progress must be accompanied by safeguards and supervision methods defined in collaboration with authorities.
