Uzbekistan's automotive market maintained stable activity in August 2026

Uzbekistan's automotive market demonstrated stable dynamics in August 2026. According to data from the Center for Economic Research and Reforms, the total number of sales of all types of vehicles in the primary and secondary markets, including electric vehicles, exceeded 79,000 units, which is almost unchanged from the previous month's figures.

Sales of passenger cars amounted to 62,500 units for the reporting month, showing an increase of 2.2% compared to July. The increase in sales was recorded in nine out of fourteen regions of Uzbekistan.

The most significant growth was observed in Bukhara region, where sales increased by 19.1%. This was followed by Tashkent region with a growth of 11.9% and Khorezm region with an increase of 10.8%. However, in the city of Tashkent, sales decreased by 10.1%, while Andijan and Fergana regions recorded sales drops of 2.7% and 2.1%, respectively.

In the primary market, sales of new passenger cars grew by 20.5%, reaching 30,600 units. The main driver of growth was domestic automobiles, whose sales increased by almost 25%, totaling 25,300 units. Sales of new imported cars reached 5,300 units, which is 7% more than last month.

Conversely, the secondary market showed less activity: sales of used passenger cars fell by 10.8%, amounting to about 32,000 units. Used cars accounted for 50.2% of the total volume of passenger car sales.

The total number of electric vehicle sales across both markets in August was 9,200 units, roughly corresponding to the level in July. Nevertheless, compared to August 2025, electric vehicle sales grew by a substantial 44.5%. The city of Tashkent registered the highest number of electric vehicle sales—6,300 units, followed by Fergana region (662 units) and Tashkent region (455 units).

The capital continues to play a key role in the electric vehicle segment, accounting for 68.5% of the total market volume.

Uzbekistani Sum Maintains Stability Amid Currency Supply Exceeding Demand

As of September 24, the US dollar was trading around 11,800 UZS. Following a sharp rise in February, the US currency is showing a stable downward trend. In the summer, the exchange rate fell below 11,910 UZS for the first time since December 2025, and in September, it remained consistently below the 12,000 UZS mark. Current levels are among the lowest recorded since the devaluation three years ago.

One explanation for the strengthening of the sum is the improvement in the balance of foreign currency in the domestic market. In the first half of the year, demand for foreign currency increased by 20%, reaching 32 billion US dollars, while supply, excluding Central Bank operations, grew even faster—by 31%, totaling 27.8 billion US dollars. As a result, the foreign currency deficit decreased by 1.3 billion US dollars, which accounts for 24%.

International reserves also serve as an additional support for stability, exceeding 72 billion US dollars at the beginning of September, reaching their highest level since February.

Support from the Macroeconomic Environment

The macroeconomic situation also contributes to the strengthening of the national currency. At the meeting on September 16, the Central Bank maintained the key rate at 14%. Annual inflation in August decreased to 6.2%, and core inflation reduced by approximately 5.5%. Nevertheless, the regulator is not yet ready to ease monetary policy due to sustained domestic demand and ongoing price pressure. This effectively means that positive real interest rates support the attractiveness of savings in sums, and the growth of the real effective exchange rate helps curb imported inflation.

Risks also exist. Strong consumer and investment demand supports imports and business needs for foreign currency, while high global prices for raw materials, food, and energy may intensify imported inflation. An additional risk is the further liberalization of regulated prices. However, at the moment, the combination of growing foreign currency supply and the Central Bank's tight monetary policy allows the sum to remain strong. For the coming week, the base range for the dollar/sum pair remains within 11,700–11,950.

Car sales volume in Uzbekistan in August exceeded July figures but lags behind 2025 levels

In August, 37,798 cars were sold in Uzbekistan. This figure showed a growth of 20.4% compared to July, but it was 17.2% lower than in the same period last year. For the period from January to August, the volume of passenger car sales approached the mark of 250 thousand units, which is 5.9% less than in the corresponding period of 2025.

Sales dynamics and market leaders

According to information provided by the Automobile Business Association of Uzbekistan via Podrobno.uz, the market leader in August was the Chevrolet brand, accounting for about 28 thousand sales. It was followed by BYD with over four thousand units sold, Kia with 2.7 thousand, HAVAL with 878, and CHERY with 732. Growth in sales of the Nevo and Geely brands was also noted, amounting to 210 and 201 cars, respectively.

The most popular model in August was the Chevrolet Cobalt. In this month, buyers purchased over 12 thousand such cars, which is significantly more than the less than six thousand in July. Thus, sales of this model more than doubled, accounting for 32.3% of the total market volume.

Consumer demand shows uneven changes depending on the car class. Sales in segments A and B, as well as in larger categories E/F, minivans, and light commercial vehicles, decreased compared to last year. At the same time, there is a trend towards choosing crossovers and more spacious models. Sales growth was recorded in the SUV-E, SUV-D, SUV-C segments, as well as among C-class sedans. Premium SUVs showed the most noticeable positive dynamic, with sales increasing almost threefold.

The August sales growth coincides with an increase in domestic car production. The National Committee on Statistics reported that from January to July, 263.7 thousand passenger cars were produced in Uzbekistan, which is 9.4% higher than the figure for the same period in 2025. Among manufacturers, UzAuto Motors led with 185.8 thousand cars, ADM Jizzakh with 27.7 thousand, and BYD with 17.8 thousand cars.

It should be noted that in July, the Uzbek car market maintained a high level of activity, selling almost 80 thousand cars. In July, the increase in sales of new cars and electric vehicles was particularly noticeable, with demand rising by 10.8%.
